Meet Clinton, the newest member of the Fiji Book Drive team! 📚💙

Clinton’s journey with Fiji Book Drive began back in 2022, when he was a student at Geelong Grammar.

As part of their International Baccalaureate community service, Clinton and his friends organised the collection of 10,000 books, raised $3,500 in just one month and rallied 25 volunteers to help pack the books! 📦👏

Absolute literacy legends!

Fast forward to his first year at university, Clinton reached out to our founder, Fiona, on LinkedIn to ask how he could get more involved in charity work.

Fiona’s advice? Get some real-world experience.

And that’s exactly what he did!

When a school friend at Ormond College shared our Administrative Assistant position with him, Clinton applied.

We had some stellar applicants, but Clinton’s passion, lionheartedness and dynamic ability to turn ideas into action really stood out.

We’re thrilled to announce that Clinton will be joining the Fiji Book Drive team in 2027! 🎉

And a fun fact before we go...

Clinton was named after two of his dad’s favourites, Bill Clinton and Clint Eastwood. His middle name in Thai also means “articulate.” How fitting! 😂

A beautiful story from Our Founder and CEO Fiona Luth:

Some weeks ago as I posted earlier on LinkedIn I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful Community Minded Ladies in Rutherglen.

One of the ladies called Mandy told me she had a challenging health condition that kept her housebound. Her life had completely changed from an active and full life to a more housebound life. She was a very good seamstress. She kindly volunteered to make book bags for Fijian children.

A few weeks later another Community Minded volunteer called Sandra rang me and said that Mandy had made 104 book bags. I was delighted! I told Sandra that I was going to Fiji within the week and should be able to carry the bags. Sandra then hopped on the Sunday morning early bus from Wangaratta to Melbourne to deliver these bags.

A human chain of goodness! I will have much pleasure in explaining to the kids and teachers of Fiji the story of these bags. I believe that kindness is a like a vitamin pill for the soul.

These bags help inculcate a reading culture in Fiji and let Fijian children know that far, far away from their home is a lady thinking of them and sowing these bags with love and care.

This school was established in 1975.

Until now, it had never had library books.

That’s more than 50 years of students coming through this school without access to a library. Two generations of children.

And now, there is a well considered and curated library collection with the needs and interest of the students factored in. 📚

This is one of the things we love most about the work we do. Sometimes the impact is very simple. A school that has never had books, now has them.

And a whole new generation of children will grow up with access to stories, information and the joy of reading.

Our shipment of books has arrived in Fiji and the container is open.

WANANAVU! 🇫🇯📚

On the left we have Lavenia Tamani, our long-standing operations manager.

On the right is Bai, close personal aide to the Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji.

Bai came down to check out the huge donation for Fiji, and no doubt he’ll be reporting this back to the Prime Minister!

We cannot wait to distribute all these books to schools in Nadroga/Navosa, some in Pacific Harbour and some in Tailevu.

A lot of these library collections are top-up donations to schools. This is part of us doing our job properly at Fiji Book Drive. We send one library collection, then very quickly afterwards, we send top-up donations. 📦

Fiona really looks forward to visiting some of these schools in mid-October and hearing about the difference the books are making.

We absolutely loved meeting these legendary ladies from the CWA 💛

It was a rainy Sunday in Rutherglen and Fiona happened to bump into the women from the Rutherglen branch of the Country Women’s Association on the Main Street.

She stopped to look at their beautiful homemade goodies and got chatting about the wonderful work they do supporting women and families in their community.

They help in so many practical ways, from supporting women fleeing domestic violence and young mums with babies, to local food services and simply being there for people who need a hand.

And, of course, the conversation soon turned to Fiji Book Drive 📚🇫🇯

Some years ago, two of Fiona’s interns from the Western District helped connect us with the Mortlake CWA, who made a whole lot of book bags for children in Fiji.

That connection was especially meaningful for Fiona, as her Grandma was a lifelong member and contributor to the Mortlake CWA.

Now, from one completely unplanned conversation on a rainy Saturday, the Rutherglen CWA and eight nearby CWA branches are going to make book bags for school children in Fiji 💙

One of the ladies shared that her health isn’t what it used to be and she can no longer do some of the outdoor activities she once loved. She said she was so grateful to have a meaningful project she could work on that would help someone else.

That really stayed with us.

This is what community looks like. People bringing what they can, sharing their time and skills, supporting each other, and creating something that will make a real difference to someone else.

A huge Vinaka Vakalevu to the wonderful women of Rutherglen CWA and the surrounding branches. We are so delighted to be working with you to get beautiful, handmade book bags into the hands of Fijian children. ✨📚

With Father’s Day coming up this Sunday in both Fiji and Australia 💙📚

At Fiji Book Drive, we encourage children to read with the male figures in their lives, whether that’s their tata (dad), tutu (grandad), uncle, brother or another father figure.

So, in honour of Father’s Day, we’re celebrating the tatas, tutus and father figures who make time to read with the children around them. Vinaka Vakalevu!

📖 This weekend, make time to pick up a book and share a story with a child in your life.

A very productive packing day with the team from Geelong Grammar School 📚🇫🇯

Together, the students and staff packed more than 17,000 books across five pallets, all bound for children and schools in Fiji.

Jonathan Twigg, an experienced educator with strong Fijian connections, was at the helm, with support from Malcolm Dow and Elinor Knappert. The students absolutely motored through the work.

A big thank you to CYGNETT for hosting us, and to Pete Wilkins for his steady and consistent support of Fiji Book Drive.

And thank you to every Geelong Grammar student and staff member who gave their time and energy to the day, alongside Jonathan, Malcolm and Elinor.

That is another 17,000+ books packed and ready for the next stage of their journey to Fiji.

Kadavu is where Fiji Book Drive got its legs as a charity 📚

A recent comment from Talei Ann Barber really stopped us in our tracks.

While in Naivakarauniniu village in Kadavu, Talei spoke with Makareta, who shared that her son was the first in the village to benefit from Fiji Book Drive.

Today, there are 22 children and 8 preschoolers in the village.

There’s something really special about hearing stories like this so many years later.

Fiji Book Drive began in 2011 after Fiona visited Kadavu and saw first hand the lack of quality books available in local schools. To now hear from a family connected to those early days feels very full circle.

One donation can have an impact that is still being felt years later. That’s what makes this work so important.

The books we send are not just for one child, one class or one year. They can be shared, loved and passed on through a whole community.

The first photo takes us back to Fiji Book Drive’s original book bags, lovingly designed by Fiona’s dear school friend Kirsty Begg. Ten years later, our bags have a new look.

The book bags in Slide 2 feature our new logo and were created, through our partnership with Rise Beyond the Reef, with a unique Fijian design. Rise Beyond the Reef supports woman living in remote rural communities and people with disabilities through meaningful employment. 🧵🇫🇯

The bags may have changed over the past decade, but the spirit at the heart of Fiji Book Drive’s work has not. The smiles in last two slides, captured during a 2016 book delivery trip to Fiji, say it all. 💛📚

Vinaka vakalevu to all those who have supported Fiji Book Drive along the way. Here’s to the next ten years!
