Kadavu is where Fiji Book Drive got its legs as a charity 📚

A recent comment from Talei Ann Barber really stopped us in our tracks.

While in Naivakarauniniu village in Kadavu, Talei spoke with Makareta, who shared that her son was the first in the village to benefit from Fiji Book Drive.

Today, there are 22 children and 8 preschoolers in the village.

There’s something really special about hearing stories like this so many years later.

Fiji Book Drive began in 2011 after Fiona visited Kadavu and saw first hand the lack of quality books available in local schools. To now hear from a family connected to those early days feels very full circle.

One donation can have an impact that is still being felt years later. That’s what makes this work so important.

The books we send are not just for one child, one class or one year. They can be shared, loved and passed on through a whole community.

If you have a Fiji Book Drive story from years gone by, we’d love to hear it. 🌴📖

The first photo takes us back to Fiji Book Drive’s original book bags, lovingly designed by Fiona’s dear school friend Kirsty Begg. Ten years later, our bags have a new look.

The book bags in Slide 2 feature our new logo and were created, through our partnership with Rise Beyond the Reef, with a unique Fijian design. Rise Beyond the Reef supports woman living in remote rural communities and people with disabilities through meaningful employment. 🧵🇫🇯

The bags may have changed over the past decade, but the spirit at the heart of Fiji Book Drive’s work has not. The smiles in last two slides, captured during a 2016 book delivery trip to Fiji, say it all. 💛📚

Seeing these numbers fills us with pride, but they only tell part of the story.

Behind every book packed is an incredible community of volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to Geelong Grammar School, whose staff and students form the bulk of our volunteer team. We simply couldn’t do this without you. We are also so grateful to our newest partners, Morgan Stanley, Ormond College and CYGNETT, for joining us on this journey.

Packing a 40-foot container takes an enormous amount of human effort, and simply wouldn’t be possible without the generous pro-bono services of so many people. Vinaka vakalevu to Freightworks and our shipping partners who continue to donate their expertise and services. Your support makes every shipment possible.

Thank you also to our wonderful donors, including eye heart, Lioncrest Publishing and Eleanor Curtain Publishing. A special shout out to South Pacific School Aid, who continue to donate the majority of the books that fill our containers.

While we’re incredibly proud that our upcoming shipment contains 70,551 books for 51 schools, we also know there is still so much more to do. Each shipment takes far more than simply donations and volunteers. A big thank you to Mainfreight and AJ Linfoot for what they do behind the scenes.

This is what community looks like. Thank you for believing that every child deserves access to books and the opportunities they create. Let’s keep lifting each other up. 🇫🇯📚💛

It’s extraordinary and heartwarming when a call out on LinkedIn equals real deliverable outcomes in Fiji.

In this case, Fiji Book Drive responded to a post made by Alana Wylie of eye heart. Alana said she had Science kits that were looking for a home. She sent the kits down to Fiona to look at and assess their suitability, and she could see the incredible educational value of these kits and the literacy skills that they would boost.

In summary, in excess of $80,000 worth of incredible Science kits with huge literacy value will be donated to Fiji Book Drive. This is worth celebrating.

Fijian teachers will be delighted to use these kits with their students. A major thank you to Alana Wylie and eye heart!

Introducing Jonathan Twigg…

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Jonathan Twigg as Fiji Book Drive’s newest Ambassador. 👏

When Fiona and Jonathan first met in 2024, during Jonathan’s time as Deputy Head of Junior School at Caulfield Grammar, it quickly became clear that their paths had crossed in more ways than one. ☺️

They are both Geelong Grammar alumni, and Fiona fondly remembers Jonathan’s dad from his days leading the Corio campus. They hit it off from that first conversation, united by their shared mission to brighten the world through the magic of books and education. 📚💛

Jonathan’s love affair with Fiji goes back to the mid-90s when he lived and taught in Nadi with his Fijian former wife, whose family is from the island of Gau. His son, Jake, was born in Fiji in 1995, and while his daughter, Chloe, arrived during a teaching stint in the Bahamas, both kids are proudly Fijian at heart. 🇫🇯❤️ Through years of teaching around the globe, the family have always returned to reconnect with loved ones and enjoy the island life. 🌊🌴

These days, Jonathan has traded the traditional classroom for full-time storytelling with his business, Twiggy’s Tales 📖✨. He travels to schools near and far, bringing stories to life through engaging performances and interactive activities that leave students and teachers grinning from ear to ear. 🎭😊

It is hard to imagine a more natural fit for our mission. Jonathan, we are so grateful to have you on this journey with us, and cannot wait to see what we will achieve together. If you’d like to connect with Jonathan, his email is [email protected] 🌏🤲

Follow along to learn more about Jonathan’s journey with Fiji Book Drive, and the real impact our work has! 💌

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the wonderful team from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management to the Fiji Book Drive warehouse.

From the moment they arrived, they brought positivity, teamwork and a genuine willingness to help. Every person rolled up their sleeves, worked hard and made the day an absolute joy.

Together, they packed:

📚 13,204 books
📦 245 boxes
🏫 Resources for 13 schools across Fiji

These books will soon find their way into classrooms and libraries where they will be read, shared and loved by thousands of students. What was just a few hours of volunteering here in Melbourne will have a lasting impact on children and teachers across Fiji.

A very special thank you to and for your long term support and commitment to Fiji Book Drive. Your encouragement over the years has meant so much to our charity, and we’re grateful to have you in our corner.

To everyone from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, thank you for your enthusiasm, kindness and hard work. Vinaka Vakalevu!

If you’d like to learn more about Fiji Book Drive, organise a volunteer day with your workplace, or simply have a chat about what we do, we’d love to hear from you.

📚 Seeing the impact of our work firsthand is always something special.

Over the past two weeks, Fiji Book Drive board member Rosie Silva has been visiting schools across Fiji, including Precious Pearls Preschool and Nadi District School, both of which have received books from Fiji Book Drive.

Rosie has a deep understanding of the importance of early childhood education, and while in Fiji she shared a simple but powerful message: parents are a child’s first teachers. Reading together, talking, and spending time with young children helps build strong foundations for lifelong learning. These were some of the key messages she shared during Early Childhood Education Week at Precious Pearls Preschool.

We’re proud to see Rosie representing Fiji Book Drive and helping spread the joy of literacy. A big Vinaka Vakalevu also to Lavenia, who joined her throughout the visit and vinaka to The Fiji Times for sharing this story. 💙

10 reasons to give now!

Kaila loves reading because it has helped improve her English.

Timoci says a classroom without books would be "boring and dull."

Tomas believes books help him "travel the world in mind."

Vani simply says, "I love reading and it makes me happy."

And then there are dreams of becoming pilots, electricians, teachers, police officers and doctors. 💙📚

These are just a few of the hundreds of children whose lives have been touched by the books you have helped place into schools across Fiji.

This year, our goals are ambitious:
📖 Send 100,000 books🌺 Deliver books in Fijian Bauan and Hindi to up to 80 schools🏫 Set up 100 new school libraries

Every book opens a door. Every donation helps a child imagine a different future.

As we approach the end of the financial year, there is still time to make a tax-deductible gift and help bring the Joy of Stories to even more children across Fiji.

Your donation today will be doubled, meaning twice the books, twice the libraries, and DOUBLE the Joy of Stories for children across Fiji.

Give here: https://doublejoyofstories.raiselysite.com/

Vinaka Vakalevu to every person who has donated, volunteered, shared our story or cheered us on. We couldn't do this without you.

“We are very thankful to you.”

These words from Sister Margarita are for every single person who has supported Fiji Book Drive.

She teaches Year 5 in Fiji, and she’s seen her students grow in confidence through the books you’ve helped provide. Children are choosing more challenging books, making connections with the world around them, and even struggling readers are discovering the joy of reading.

That’s the difference you make.

Right now, your gift can go twice as far through our Double the Joy of Stories Appeal. Thanks to generous matching donors, every donation will be matched while funds last.

We are delighted to launch our partnership with The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort! 🏔️

Sometimes the best partnerships start with a simple conversation.

While horse riding in Victoria’s High Country 🐎, our Founder and CEO, Fiona Luth, discovered that William Work, Manager of resort, is Fijian. That connection immediately resonated with her and sparked a wonderful relationship.

What makes this partnership even more special is the connection between The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort, , and Timbertop. It’s a trifecta of synergies and commonalities all coming together 🤝

Vinaka Vakalevu 🙏 to William Work, Nicolette Kolozsi, and Emma Todd for helping bring this partnership to life, and to the many Geelong Grammar families who support businesses that give back to the community. 📚

Together, we’re helping put more books into the hands of children across Fiji. 🇫🇯📖
