Most people thinking about electric mobility immediately think of an EV.
But for many everyday trips, the smarter question is not which car to buy. It is whether you need a car at all.
For commuting, errands, school runs and local transport, an eBike or eCargo bike can often be the more practical and affordable electric vehicle, especially for those who do not have time to sit in traffic, look for parking, and carry the full cost of driving.
That is the real opportunity in Australia. Instead of making low-risk electric mobility harder to access, policy should support the growth of safe, compliant e-bikes and eCargo bikes as part of everyday transport.
Legal pedal-assist e-bikes are not the problem. They expand access to cycling, help people replace short car trips, and give more Australians a practical way to move around without relying on a car for every journey. The focus should be on distinguishing standard compliant e-bikes from higher-powered devices, while improving enforcement, infrastructure and education.
If Australia gets this right, e-bikes and eCargo bikes can play a major role in reducing congestion, lowering transport costs and giving households a more practical path into electric mobility.
For many households, the best first electric vehicle may not be a car at all.
