🌟NEW🌟 Q&A series!!

Starting from our head sensei / Kenshikan head sensei , Yoichi Yano Sensei - Kyoshi 7th Dan .

Yano Sensei was the head coach of the Australian team for the previous World Kendo Championships (WKC) 2024 in Italy ✨✨

🌟When did you start Kendo?

-It was around 1980 at Sydney Kendo Club, the third year since I arrived in Australia. That was my first trip overseas. There was little about Japanese at the time in Australia and I was lost. I needed something to help me identify myself. It will be 46 years doing Kendo this year.

🌟What was the hardest thing in your Kendo life so far?

-To manage myself and how best to satisfy myself. Whether it is shiai, tachiai or keiko, my opponent has always been myself with my kensen pointing at me. Kendo has always been about me and how to manage myself. It is an elusive task and that is why this story is never ending.

🌟What motivates you to keep doing Kendo?

- I believe Kendo gave me my identity when I was lost. Kendo in a way helped me find myself. I am obliged to keep on going until such time IT tells me that I have done enough and that I can lock away shinai for good.

🌟 What is Kendo to you?

-A lot of things but mainly about me and how I interact with people. Kendo is 61 % of what I am and who I am . It is also a physical pain and lots of times the source of stress and frustration. But why don't I quit? Because it dominates 61% of what I am and who I am.

🌟 In your opinion, what is the most challenging part of Kendo?

- First and foremost, to maintain the right frame of mind while you are in training. Sometimes, I can be in charge of it but more often not. The mind seems to have its own will and often walks its own.

🌟In your opinion what is the most rewarding part of Kendo?

- When you receive a sense of achievement by engaging with it and accomplishing your tasks. My highlight is the 2024 WKC. No matter how temporary it was, nothing beats the moment and that sense of achievement that I shared with my team.

🌟 Any message for people new to Kendo?

-Be hungry to learn and be hungry to practice. Learn by doing not by thinking. Treat it as Kendo is your profession and always keep it beside you.
