Panjat Hujan is an experiment that unfolds in a sanctified space, guided by hidden grids that connect the living world with the abstract. Invoking a state of trance, sensation arrive in a spectrum, from intense to imperceptible. In the struggle to survive, are we strong enough to be gentle?

Trance dancers Tony Yap and Jack Riley, and composer Reuben Lewis bring the world of the Bugis-Bissu to life through movement and sound.

Following the performance, join Tony Yap, Indonesian videographer Rajecky “Ekhy” Kene (who documented Tony’s residency with the Bugis-Bissu community in Makassar), Dr Sharyn Davies (Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre, Monash University), and Dr Monika Winarnita (Asia Institute, University of Melbourne). Together, they’ll reflect on Bugis-Bissu heritage and explore how art, anthropology, and ritual intersect.

This project is seed-funded and co-presented by Asialink at the University of Melbourne through the Regional // Regional program with the support of The Playking Foundation. Temperance Hall and The Unconformity Festival are its commissioning partners.

Sunday 12 October | 6–8 PM
Temperance Hall, South Melbourne

Translating to “Climbing the Rain,” Panjat Hujan embodies the absence of the word “impossible” from the language of indigenous Bugis people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Exploring symbolic rituals that refract time and space, this multicultural collaboration draws from practice of a different era still relevant today, bridging shamanistic tradition and contemporary dance.

The Panjat Hujan performance will be followed by an artist talk and panel discussion led by the collaborating artists and academics from the Asia Institute at the University of Melbourne and the Herb Feith Indonesia Engagement Centre at Monash University.

Applications now open for The Weight of Mountains Filmmaking Residency

A Development and Thematic Residency Program for Film or Screen-based Media Artists

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. December 2025 - February 2026

Nếu bạn muốn nộp đơn bằng tiếng Việt, hãy gửi email đến [email protected]

The Weight of Mountains (TWOM) is a nomadic artist residency for filmmakers and screen based media artists, immersing artists in a new location every 2 - 4 years. Our next residency will take place in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam from 2nd December 2025 to 28th February 2026.

The residency program aims to bring together like minds with unique voices, perspectives, and backgrounds in film while enabling site and environment to act as a character, provocation, portal, or cinematic presence through immersion into global locations.

We collaborate with local arts organisations, arts collectives, and/or local filmmakers. We try to harmonise the interests of filmmakers with the communities we take them to and contribute to the broader film community in each region.

As we reinvigorate the residency for 2025/2026, we’re inspired to reimagine The Weight of Mountains framework in Ho Chi Minh City — offering artists a provocative challenge: how can they engage with the layered complexity, cultural intersections, historical echoes, and contemporary energy distinct to Ho Chi Minh City?

The residency includes accommodation, residency hub/studio space at A Farm International Art Residency, various screenings and networking events, as well as the support of a local curator in Ho Chi Minh City, and the TWOM team.

Applications close 2 June, 2025.
