From crisis consultants to yoga teachers, 38-year CFA volunteers to local council members, climate warriors to community leaders, our latest Practitioner Training in Geelong (held in collaboration with Geelong Sustainability) featured a wonderfully diverse cohort.

Over the four immersive training sessions, they learnt how to engage and empower their respective communities to respond to challenges and thrive into the future; a wholehearted thank you for trusting us to deepen your knowledge and community engagement skills.

We look forward to seeing these trained practitioners support their communities to build connections and to become better prepared for whatever the future brings.

Congratulations to one of our Canopy Communities - Resilient Carisbrook in Victoria - for holding a wonderful, family-friendly event on Sunday that brought people together for an afternoon of community and fun 🥳

After initial fears of a washout following heavy rain, the weather cleared just in time for the 300+ attendees to enjoy the celebratory event, which combined: 🚒 an emergency preparedness expo, 🎸 live music, 🌭 food vans, 🧗 a climbing wall, 🚂a Lion's Club train, 🐯face painting, and much more.

Resilient Carisbrook also presented their draft resilience plan and invited people to help decide on which actions to prioritise. Restoring the town hall and railway station, having a splash park in the area, and improving public transport were three popular ideas.

The Celebrate Carisbrook event was a rip-roaring success, and we look forward to seeing this community group host more events to boost community connection, and to work through the meaningful actions they have identified to help their community thrive into the future.

Fancy some good news to end your week 🙂?

Last week, three Canopy Communities based in Kempsey NSW celebrated the launch of their respective action plans, an important milestone on their community-led resilience building journeys. A big congratulations to all involved! And thank you to everyone who attended the beautiful launch event (pictured).

Macleay Youth Rising, Spadco (Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation), and Macleay Valley Business Chamber join a growing number of Canopy Communities with complete or near-complete action plans, community groups that are now ready to turn their identified focus areas and projects into reality with the support of benevolent partners.

Speaking of, this milestone would not have been possible without the support of Essential Energy, Kempsey Shire Council and Minderoo Foundation. Thank you for empowering communities to become more resilient!

Last weekend, The Resilience Canopy attended not one but two exciting community events!

🌏🙌 On Saturday, we connected with community-minded folk at One Planet Festival, a free, family-friendly celebration of local action and practical ideas run by Geelong - Bellarine - Surfcoast Parents for Climate in Ocean Grove VIC. Combining food, entertainment, workshops and much more, it was great to see so many diverse people coming together to help create a thriving, fairer, climate-wise future.

🏘️🪱 The next day, we joined Canopy Community South Melbourne Sustainability Group (SMSG) at a Neighbour Day event, in which locals bonded over activities grounded in nature, wellbeing and sustainable community life. Sessions focused on practical, human-scale experiences that make belonging part of everyday living; Rachel and Mabel from SMSG promoted vermicomposting (worm composting).

We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of both and encourage everyone to connect, engage, and witness the power of community spirit firsthand at wonderful events like these.

Local businesses have long been a pillar of strength in the idyllic but flood-prone town of Kempsey NSW, providing vital employment, boosting the local economy, and supporting charities, clubs, and organisations.

But over the past decade, various shocks and stresses, including multiple extreme weather events, have left the CBD stagnant and facing a critical turning point.

Last month marked a joy-filled leap forward for Resilient Rainbows 🌈, a Canopy Community that is working to strengthen LGBTIQA+ leadership and wellbeing in the Huon Valley of Tasmania.

After months of planning and creative thinking, this collective of informal leaders stepped into the spotlight to share their long-awaited Resilience Plan with the broader community at not one but two vibrant community events.

🎨 The first was a Huon Valley ARTBOX Takeover, in which Resilient Rainbows created a welcoming and vibrant space to showcase their vision so far.

🏳️‍🌈 They then hired a pride bus to transport Huon Valley locals—including families, young people, and elders—safely to Hobart Pride Parade, where they celebrated diversity, courage, and love.

At both events, the community heard about Resilient Rainbows and their first official resilience initiative: The Huon Valley LGBTIQA+ Mentoring Program, which was met with a great deal of enthusiasm.

Resilient Rainbows has officially begun its next chapter. And if this past weekend is anything to go by, it’s going to be bright, bold, and beautifully community powered 💚!

Which-Way Cultural & Community Care has just received a $25k Resilience Canopy Activation Grant, generously funded by our friends at RACQ Foundation.

This grant will help the not-for-profit organisation host gatherings that bring families, young people and Elders together in a safe, inclusive space, and to promote social connection through activities like yarning circles, vision boards, and crafts.

Based in the Cairns region of Queensland, Which-Way is on a mission to address its community’s ongoing challenges, which include limited access to culturally appropriate services, high demand for family support, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma and disconnection.

We are thrilled to be supporting them to strengthen families, empower children, build cultural pride, and plan for disasters.
