TukTuk Charity Early childhood resource charity in Cambodia — with a sweet ride 😎🛺

💛 Help us make a difference: https://tuktukcharity.org/donate/

Originally created in 2015, we started out as Tuk Tuk Theatre and had the aim of bringing smiles to the kids in the surrounding districts of Pursat, Cambodia. TTT was originally started because we found that funding in Cambodia is concentrated on formal education and health but often lacks when it comes to informal education and personal development. Children often have to work for their family fr

om a young age and miss out on the fun and games we associate with our own childhood. Tuk Tuk Theatre was developed to engage kids in fun activities, spread smiles and engage the imagination of Cambodian children living in rural villages allowing them to dream of something bigger than the small communities where they live. Well things got serious and what started as a fun, part time hobby, turned into a more professional project. The more we worked with the kids the more we could see areas to improve and the different benefits that we were helping to introduce. As we started to dedicate more time to the project we realised that most of the kids that we work with are preschool age. With one of our founders already working in the Department of Education in Pursat, we thought it would be a simple leap from informal education to formal education. Educations starts at kindergarten and we soon learned that the kids in Cambodia were missing out on a lot due to a lack of resources. Enter the Tuk Tuk Mobile library. Starting in 2017, we expanded this project to include more support for teachers and more resources for children. We have grand goals of expanding this project further in 2017 and 2018 to reach more teachers and help more students through our online resources that are available for everyone in Cambodia. Kindergarten runs in the mornings from 7am to 10.30am and we run our Tuk Tuk Theatre in the afternoons so this rounded out our charity to a full time organisation. Fast forward to today were we have grown from 1 permanent volunteer and quite a few temporary volunteers to 8 fulltime staff, (2 volunteers and 6 paid Khmer staff), plus support from the local community and international volunteers. We have expanded the Tuk Tuk Theatre to work in 5 different villages and 2 schools and operate the Tuk Tuk Mobile Library in 6 state kindergartens and one class for disabled children in Pursat.

Four districts. Four technical meetings. One month.

Our final March support visit took us to the Pursat City District technical meeting on March 28. This rounded out a month of travelling across Pursat Province, sitting alongside teachers in their districts, and connecting with the champion teachers who are at the heart of CLIP 4's approach.

Pursat City brings its own dynamics — larger classes, different parent schedules, and teaching challenges that look different from the more rural districts. But the teachers' dedication is exactly the same.

Looking back at March as a whole, what stands out is the consistency. In every district — from remote Ta Lor Senchey to central Pursat City — teachers are meeting regularly, discussing their practice, and actively looking for ways to improve. That's not something we created. It's something the education system built, and something we're privileged to support.

These four visits are part of the CLIP 4 support structure. Over the next two years, we'll continue showing up, listening, and working alongside teachers across the province. March was just the beginning.

Mayu attended the completion ceremony of a Preschool Teacher Training Course in Phnom Penh, led by Ms. Kaori Masuda, who previously facilitated an R4C workshop. The training covered six themes ranging from children’s autonomy and development to assessment, nutrition, and teaching materials, including R4C resources.

The ceremony was also attended by Ms. Kim Sethany from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoES), highlighting the importance of this training at a national level.

What brought Mayu great joy was seeing how strongly the focus on children’s autonomy and independence resonated with the Cambodian teachers. The idea of creating environments where children can make their own choices, act independently, and be respected as equal partners in learning was clearly meaningful to them. Ms. Kaori emphasized that supporting autonomy means allowing children to make decisions and valuing the learning process over results.

Mayu deeply resonated with the message that good education is what makes children happy, and looks forward to seeing this learning passed on from teacher trainers to future teachers, and ultimately reach many children.

For TukTuk, 2026 marks the beginning of a new chapter and new challenges.

At the end of 2025, Keiko—our Japanese team member who supported TukTuk as a project manager for over five years—graduated from TukTuk 🎓 and stepped forward into a new path. Her contributions have been immense. Through careful preparation and thoughtful support of our activities, she played a central role in leading the CLIP project with dedication and care.

While we truly miss her, the TukTuk team is now taking on new responsibilities and moving forward step by step—sometimes with uncertainty, but always with determination. At the same time, we wholeheartedly support Keiko and the new challenges ahead of her.

Keiko shared this message with us:
She joined TukTuk in December 2020, and sharing TukTuk’s daily activities and life in Cambodia with all of you has been one of her greatest joys. Through her work, she was constantly reminded that continuing our activities in Cambodia over many years is only possible because of the warm and ongoing support from everyone.

Keiko says TukTuk is a unique and inspiring team, full of passion and love, and she is deeply proud to have been part of it. From now on, she will continue to support TukTuk together with all of you—as a proud member of the TukTuk Krousah.

Thank you, Keiko, for these amazing five years. We can’t wait to see what the future holds—for both you and TukTuk! 🔥

We were once again invited to Seinan Jo Gakuin University in Fukuoka to speak to their volunteer studies class. This year, Mayu delivered the presentation, sharing TukTuk’s journey and work with the students.

Many students shared that this was their first time learning in depth about Cambodia’s history and current situation, and that they were deeply moved by how TukTuk has grown and evolved over time. Several also mentioned that our guiding philosophy—Build / Access / Sustain—felt fresh and helped them rethink what meaningful support and donations can truly look like.

We were especially encouraged by the thoughtfulness, curiosity, and sincerity with which the students engaged throughout the session.

Once again this year, students will be supporting TukTuk by creating activity videos, drawing videos, and assisting with PR efforts. The creativity, energy, and care the younger generation brings to our work continues to be a powerful source of motivation for us.

We’re delighted to share that TukTuk has just completed its 13th storybook in the Tukbook series! From our very first book, Jack the Giant, the series has continued to grow—and thanks to your continued support, we’ve reached this meaningful milestone together.

What makes Tukbooks special is that they go beyond storytelling. Each title is accompanied by songs, worksheets, and games designed to bring the stories to life and deepen children’s learning. This 13th book also marks a special moment for us, as it will be the final Tukbook released in this full resource format. Future titles will be published as stand-alone storybooks, making this release especially close to our hearts.

Our newest—and final—Tukbook as a complete resource package is “Ranana and Meakara’s Village Orchestra.” In the story, Ranana and Meakara attend a relative’s wedding, where they encounter traditional Cambodian musical instruments. Some they are allowed to try, while others they can only admire. When they later share the experience with Jack, he tells them how he used to make his own instruments as a child. Inspired, the children begin creating instruments from everyday materials. As their handmade creations grow in number, Teacher Sok brings everyone together for a joyful village orchestra performance.

Through this story, we hope to inspire children to explore Cambodian culture, traditional music and instruments, and the joy of creativity and making 🎶

We’re happy to share that our series of picture books created by the TukTuk staff has reached its fifth title! Each book reflects the creator’s own ideas, creativity, and deep care for children’s learning. This time, the author is Keiko, and the book is titled Borai’s Missing Ball.

The story follows Borai as he searches for his precious lost ball—inviting children to join the journey as active participants. Along the way, young readers are introduced to words related to colors, numbers, shapes, and positions, helping them naturally build new vocabulary while enjoying the story and supporting Borai in his search.

For this book, we were also delighted to welcome a volunteer illustrator. Lorna, Adrian’s niece, generously brought the story to life through her illustrations. While TukTuk’s familiar illustration style is always loved, experiencing a different art style can help children develop a broader sense of creativity and visual awareness.

More staff-created picture books are already in the works and waiting to be shared. Please stay tuned to discover the wonderful stories coming next 👀

This marks the fourth picture book created by the Tukstaff! Written by Leakhena, Pchum Ben beautifully reflects her passion for preserving Cambodian culture for future generations.

Pchum Ben is a 15-day Cambodian religious festival and one of the country’s most important annual traditions, alongside the Khmer New Year. Each year, families visit temples to honor and remember their ancestors. During this time, Phnom Penh grows quieter as many people return to their hometowns, while rural communities come alive with the warmth, stories, and laughter of family gatherings.

The picture book captures meaningful moments from the celebration, including temple visits and step-by-step instructions for making Nom Ong Som, a traditional Cambodian dish enjoyed during the festival. Because every family celebrates Pchum Ben in its own way, the Tukstaff engaged in many thoughtful discussions while shaping the story. Through this process, they also deepened their own understanding and appreciation of Cambodian culture.

The illustrations for The Ugly Duckling, lovingly created over the past year by students from the English Department at Seinan Jo Gakuin University, are finally complete and ready to be shared!

In Cambodia, storytelling is an important part of the preschool curriculum. However, access to physical picture books remains limited, as these materials are not part of the standard resources distributed by the Ministry of Education—and no digital versions are currently available. As a result, teachers often need to prepare their own materials. To help bridge this gap, we adapted the well-known story The Ugly Duckling into a Cambodian version and invited the students to bring the story to life through their illustrations.

The students’ artwork carries a unique charm that sets it apart from TUKTUK’s usual picture book style, making it especially beloved by teachers and children alike. This project was no exception—the illustrations turned out absolutely adorable! 🥰
