Have you ever wondered why your child is described as “quiet,” “disruptive,” or “not engaged” at school, but behaves completely differently at home?

Sometimes, the full picture isn’t being captured.

For African families in Australia, differences in communication style, accent, confidence, behaviour, or cultural expectations can sometimes affect how a child is perceived in the classroom.

That doesn’t automatically mean a teacher is being unfair. But it does mean parents should ask questions before making assumptions.

Instead of: “Why does the teacher have a problem with my child?”

Try: “Can you give me specific examples of what you’ve noticed?”

That one question can open a much more productive conversation.

And reading is the same.

Australia’s new national anti-bull*ying campaign is a reminder that bullying doesn’t always look obvious.

Sometimes it looks like:
• Suddenly not wanting to go to school
• Being left out of friendship groups
• “They’re just joking”
• Losing interest in activities they once enjoyed
• Becoming quieter or more withdrawn

Your child may never say, “I’m being bullied.”

So don’t only ask, “Did anything happen at school today?”
Ask questions that make it easier for them to open up.

💬 Who did you spend time with today?
💬 Did anyone make you feel uncomfortable?
💬 Is there anyone at school you try to avoid?

And most importantly, let them know: “You can tell me anything. I’ll listen.”

If your child suddenly doesn’t want to go to school, becomes quieter, withdraws from friends, or their schoolwork starts changing, don’t dismiss it as “just a phase.”

Bull*ying doesn’t always come with the words, “Someone is bull*ying me.”

Sometimes, the changes are the message.

Ask better questions. Listen without rushing to fix.
And if you notice a pattern, speak with your child and their school.

Your child should never feel like they have to handle it alone. 🤎🤍
