Congratulations to Professor Fiona Wood AO, who received the King's Medal in London last night in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to burns care and recovery.

We're incredibly fortunate to have Professor Wood as a Wounds Australia Ambassador. She generously shares her time, expertise and passion to support our advocacy for people living with wounds, particularly during Wound Awareness Week. This year was no exception, when she guided a roundtable discussion with clinicians and carers about skin tear management in Melbourne, then launched our new Be Wound Aware Education Series for consumers in Hobart.

Professor Wood also hosted a special Wound Awareness Week dinner, bringing together the clinicians who presented the series, Wounds Australia Board members, our incredible sponsors, Dr Mark Baldock and Gill Powell from GP Collective, our friends from the Pharmacy Guild, and other clinician and consumer advocates.

It was a wonderful evening, made even more memorable by Fiona's fascinating insights into her work – from technological advances and the potential of AI in wound care to the extraordinary challenge of treating injured astronauts in space!

Our heartfelt thanks to Professor Wood for her generosity and tireless commitment to improving lives: not just through her work with Wounds Australia, but through her remarkable contribution to healthcare in Australia and beyond. Congratulations, Fiona, on this richly deserved recognition!

🦶 Today marks the start of Podiatry Week!

This week, we’re proud to stand with our friends at the Australian Podiatry Association to shine a spotlight on podiatrists and the important contribution they make to keeping Australians healthy and on their feet.

In wound care, podiatrists play a vital role in prevention, early identification and management, particularly for people at risk of foot wounds and complications. From high-risk foot assessment and pressure management to footwear, offloading and multidisciplinary care, their expertise can make an important difference to healing and quality of life.

Throughout Podiatry Week (12-18 October), we’re celebrating the podiatrists working every day to protect foot health and improve patient outcomes. 💙

💙 Because not everything is black and white.

This National Amputee Awareness Week, 4-11 October, we’re supporting our friends at Amputees NSW in recognising, supporting and celebrating Australians affected by limb loss.

Amputation is often a last option following trauma, cancer, disease or infection. Many people undergoing amputation also face the process as a result of complications associated with diabetes and vascular disease, making limb loss an important issue for the wound care community too.

Limb loss can affect far more than mobility, with physical, emotional, social, environmental and financial impacts on everyday life.

💙 We’re pleased to welcome Diabetes SA as Wounds Australia’s newest Affiliate.

For more than 70 years, Diabetes SA has supported South Australians living with, or at risk of, diabetes through education, health services and professional support.

Our new affiliation will bring the diabetes and wound care communities closer together and create more opportunities to improve awareness of diabetes-related wounds and support people at risk.

Wounds Australia CEO Jeff Antcliff said the affiliation would help extend access to practical wound care information.

“For people living with diabetes, protecting foot and skin health and recognising problems early can have a significant impact on their health and quality of life," Mr Antcliff said.
