🇦🇺 DATA MATCHING: ATO & HOME AFFAIRS

Australia’s ATO and Department of Home Affairs use data-matching programs to identify and manage compliance risks. Home Affairs confirms that it has a data-matching program with the ATO involving information such as income, employment and visa-related records.

For visa holders, this is an important reminder to follow the work conditions attached to your visa. Some visas restrict the number of hours you can work, the type of work you can perform, or who you can work for. Home Affairs recommends checking your individual conditions through VEVO.

For students and other temporary visa holders, working beyond your permitted conditions can create immigration compliance issues. The exact restrictions depend on your visa, so always check the conditions that apply to you rather than relying on general information.

🚨 BUSHFIRE UPDATE — CENTRAL GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA 🔥

An out-of-control bushfire broke out near Seacombe in Central Gippsland, burning from the Longford–Loch Sport Road area towards Paradise Beach. The CFA issued a Watch and Act warning for nearby communities including Golden Beach, Paradise Beach, Seacombe and Dutson Downs, advising residents to monitor conditions and be prepared to leave.

The threat was later reported to have reduced, but CFA crews remained on the scene and authorities warned that conditions could change. Residents were advised to follow official emergency warnings and avoid travelling into the affected area.

🚗⚡ Australia’s cheapest new car is now electric!

BYD has cut the ATTO 1 Essential to $19,990 drive-away under a limited-time promotional offer, making it the first new EV in Australia to break below the $20,000 mark.

The entry-level ATTO 1 features a 30kWh Blade Battery, 65kW electric motor and up to 220km WLTP range. BYD’s official Australian specifications also list the Premium version with up to 310km WLTP range.

The $19,990 offer applies specifically to the ATTO 1 Essential and is subject to promotional conditions, availability and the applicable offer period.

A major development for Australia’s electric vehicle market, affordable EVs and new-car pricing. 🇦🇺🔋

🇦🇺 Tougher scrutiny of migration advice is becoming an important part of Australia’s migration-system reforms.

The Australian Government has said it is cracking down on rogue migration agents who knowingly support visa applications without merit.

For applicants, the message is equally important: Australia’s Department of Home Affairs warns against agents who provide incorrect advice, make false promises or submit false or misleading information. Paid immigration assistance generally must be provided by a registered migration agent, Australian legal practitioner or other authorised person.

Visa applicants remain responsible for ensuring that the information and documents submitted with their application are genuine, accurate and complete. False or misleading information can have serious consequences, including visa refusal or cancellation and potential legal penalties.

If you're applying for an Australian visa, always verify who is providing your migration advice and check the information before submitting your application.

🇦🇺 Australia has introduced new skilled visa processing priorities from 19 September 2026.

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that Ministerial Directions 121 and 122 (MD121 & MD122) have replaced the previous skilled visa processing priorities under MD119. The new directions set different processing orders for temporary skilled visas and certain provisional/permanent skilled visas.

🔹 Priority sectors now include:
Construction, Healthcare, Teaching, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fishing, Resources, Law Enforcement and Defence.
🔹 For subclass 482 (temporary skilled visas):
Priority sectors come first, followed by the Specialist Skills stream, eligible onshore applicants, certain offshore applicants, and then other applications.
🔹 For certain permanent & provisional skilled visas:
Priority sectors are followed by eligible onshore applicants, certain offshore applicants and other applications.

The directions cover visas including 482, 186, 189, 190, 191, 491 and 494, among others. Importantly, processing priority does not mean visa eligibility or a guaranteed faster decision. Actual processing times can vary depending on application completeness, volumes, required checks and other factors.

📌 If you're waiting for an Australian skilled visa, understanding where your application sits under the new processing priorities could be important.

🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA’S INTEREST RATES: WHY MORTGAGE HOLDERS ARE WATCHING CLOSELY

Australian borrowers are facing continued uncertainty as inflation remains above the RBA’s 2–3% target range. The RBA has kept the cash rate at 4.35% after three increases earlier in 2026, while warning that further increases could be considered if inflation risks materialise.

Markets have been pricing in the possibility of further rate increases, but three additional hikes are NOT confirmed. The RBA says future decisions will depend on inflation, employment, economic activity and global developments.

🇦🇺 Australia’s visa screening is entering a new phase.
Social media has become part of the wider conversation around Australia’s immigration and security screening. The Department of Home Affairs already conducts character and security assessments, and officials have confirmed that publicly available social-media activity can be considered in some cases.

In April 2026, the Coalition also proposed expanding social-media checks for visa applicants through an enhanced screening system. The proposal would require applicants to provide social-media accounts, although details of how the proposed system would operate remain subject to policy implementation.

For applicants, one thing remains clear: always provide truthful, accurate and consistent information in your visa application.

What do you think about social-media screening in Australia’s visa process?
