Wonderful to welcome the Daicos family to the Magpie Nest Café yesterday, along with the Collingwood Woodsmen.

It was fantastic to see Peter, Colleen, Josh, Annalise and 2026 Brownlow Medallist Nick Daicos serving meals, chatting with guests and genuinely taking the time to connect with people.

Moments like these remind us what community is all about. When people from all walks of life come together around a meal and a conversation, we see Melbourne at its very best.

We're incredibly grateful to Darryl and his team for generously donating their time and skills to paint part of 69 Bourke Street, Melbourne at no cost.

As the home of The Salvation Army Melbourne for more than 130 years, this beautiful old building deserves a gentle and respectful touch. Darryl and his team have shown exactly that, bringing new life to our lobby and stairwell with great care, pride and attention to detail.

Thank you for helping preserve a place that has welcomed, supported and cared for our community for generations. We couldn't be more grateful. 💙

At Melbourne Salvos 614, we're committed to helping maintain clean, safe amenities and welcoming streets for everyone. With public bins disappearing from many city locations, we've stepped up with teams of staff, volunteers and community members heading out regularly to help keep our streets tidy.

It's not glamorous work, but it's important work, and we're proud to do our bit to keep the city clean 🧹✨

🎙️ What story do we tell ourselves when we walk past someone sleeping rough?

Too often, we think we're seeing the whole story. The reality is that we're usually only seeing the final chapter.

In a recent episode of The Story Behind The Story podcast, Melbourne Salvos 614 leader Major Brendan Nottle sat down with Tom Andronas to explore the deeper realities behind homelessness in Melbourne.

Recorded at the Magpie Nest Cafe on Bourke Street, the conversation highlights why homelessness is about much more than housing alone. It explores the power of relationships, trust, belonging, and community, and why genuine connection is often the starting point for lasting change.

Brendan also shares his own journey into The Salvation Army, reflects on lessons learned from people doing it tough, and discusses a bold vision for creating pathways from vulnerability to stability, independence, and home ownership.

This is an important conversation about homelessness, but also about compassion, leadership, judgement, and understanding the stories we don't always see.

We are grateful for the Victorian Government's announcement of $500,000 in funding to keep The Salvation Army's Twilight Cafe operating at Bourke Street.

Each night, the Twilight Cafe provides hot meals, practical support, safety and connection for around 200 people experiencing homelessness or hardship. This funding will help ensure this essential service can continue supporting those who need it most.

At Melbourne Salvos 614, we believe everyone deserves access to food, safety and hope. We thank all those who have advocated for the continuation of this important service and the partnership that makes this support possible.

Together, we can continue to stand alongside people doing it tough and help create brighter futures for our community.

Thankyou San Francisco 49ers & NFL for an absolutely unforgettable day. You came to Melbourne Salvos 614 for lunch with 600 people who often miss out on these types of experiences & you brought the wonderful MC Ben Graham, the amazing 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders, mascot Sourdough Sam & 49ers legends Jesse Sapolu & Steve Bono. It was also fantastic having senior NFL official, Gerrit Meier, share with the crowd as well. It was an event that sent a profound message to every single attendee that they are seen, heard and never forgotten. A huge thankyou to Visit Victoria Australia , NFL & especially the 49ers for making this very special lunch happen. Very insightful day with over 200 in attendance at the first Social Reform Symposium held at Melbourne Salvos 614 and brilliantly organised by University of Canberra Centre of Public Ideas. There were many challenging & thought provoking presentations as well as an array of deep conversations and excellent networking. It was great to reflect on the historic & widespread reforming zeal that has occurred throughout the past in & across the City of Melbourne It was challenging but necessary to also be reminded that passionate social reform must continue to ensure that no one is left behind. They are us & deserve our unwavering support no matter what their circumstances may or may not be. So much more work & imaginative thinking to be done. A massive thank you to Bill Shorten Professor Frank Bongiorno University of Canberra , all of the wonderful presenters, symposium attendees & the 614 team for bringing the event and all of us together. This free one-day event will bring together leading thinkers, researchers and practitioners to explore Melbourne's rich history of social reform and the challenges and opportunities ahead. The day will feature speakers including Professor Bill Shorten and Professor Frank Bongiorno & many others.
