Earlier this year, we shared the story of nursing students Laya and Ella, whose placement in Inverell became much more than a university requirement. Through the National Nursing Clinical Placement Program, they gained valuable clinical skills while deepening their understanding of community, culture and primary health care.

Thanks to scholarship funding from Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network, opportunities like these help reduce the cost of undertaking rural and remote placements. We're pleased this support will continue this financial year, creating more opportunities for nursing students to gain experience in regional communities.

Stories like Laya and Ella's highlight the value of investing in clinical placements- for students, communities and the future nursing workforce. We'd love to see more PHNs invest in similar opportunities to support nursing students undertaking rural and remote placements.

As nurses arrived at this year's Festival of Nursing, they were welcomed by a new artwork by Lesley Salem AM called A Burden and a Privilege Together.

Commissioned by the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA), the painting recognises and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and the invaluable role they play in delivering primary health care to all Australians.

We interviewed Lesley in her home studio in Newcastle about the painting and its symbolism as she added the finishing touches.
