Bridge It Creating Homes and Transforming Lives

5 YEARS OF BRIDGE IT 💛

Honestly… what a ride.

Five years ago we sat around a table with a dream to create beautiful, safe homes for young people impacted homelessness and the out-of-home-care system.

Now half a decade later, here we are!

And the best moments have been the little moments we see everyday.
☀️ young people laughing in the garden
🃏 card games in the retreat
💼 first jobs
❤️ meeting partners
✨ starting to believe in their potential

That’s the magic.

I’m so grateful to our incredible team who show up every single day with so much heart, care and passion. And we also have a LOT of fun together 😂

To every supporter, donor, connector, cheerleader and friend of Bridge It. Thank you. You’ve helped make all of this possible.

AND… we’re only getting started 👀

In a few weeks we begin renovating Cocoon 2. A 15 apartment building in St Kilda that will become home for young people for the next 20 years.

It’s a HUGE project.

We’re also filming the entire process 🎥 and pitching it as a documentary series to networks right now!
And our vision?

4-5 Cocoons across Victoria by 2030.

Safe homes for 1,000 young people over the next 20 years

Last week, Sarah Morris and Carla Raynes joined at to share something bold.

We’re on a mission to complete a $1M renovation of Cocoon 2 through galvanising the construction industry to come together and make it happen.

We spoke about what the Cocoon is, why it matters, and how it supports young women and gender diverse people impacted by homelessness and the care system.

If you’re in construction, trades, or can contribute in any way, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and be part of something powerful.

Partner Update. K2LD Architects on Cocoon 2.

Our first major renovation, Cocoon 1, transformed a beautiful mansion owned by HousingFirst into a safe and beautiful home for young people. The total pro bono contribution exceeded $1.5M. Made possible through our partnership with Housing All Australians, who galvanised support across the construction industry and brought together an incredible group of partners.

One of those partners was K2LD Architects Pty Ltd , introduced to us by the Payton Foundation

They were with us every step of the way. Their work was fundamental in shaping Cocoon 1 into the deeply special place it is today.

So it means a lot that they’ve said yes AGAIN!

K2LD are now leading the architectural design for Cocoon 2. A rainbow-themed space designed in collaboration with our young people, making sure it reflects not just safety, but identity, belonging and pride.

Carla had a chat down at the Cocoon with Michelle Galea (the 2024, YMCA Victoria Mother of the Year.)

Carla shares about our latest audacious projects!

Spoiler alert: We are creating a homes for 240 young people over the next 20 years at Cocoon 2 and creating a TV show about it!

Check it out!

Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day

Almost 5 years ago we launched Bridge It to address the escalating youth homelessness crisis in Australia.

The demand for the Cocoon is so high. We have long dreamed of creating a second Cocoon to be able to provide homes to more young people!

This dream will soon become a reality!

We will be creating a safe and supportive home for over 240 young people over the next 20 years. We are looking for a range of trades and products to be able to complete this renovation.

If you think you can help us, or maybe know somebody who can, please get in touch today. DM us or email [email protected]

Sharing Big Cocoon Dreams

Kate Mackenzie is a member of Bridge It's founding team. In early 2021, Bridge It had no name, and was just a few people around a table and a big idea.

She has been instrumental in shaping what The Cocoon is today, and also importantly, how we support our team to be the best they can be and to truly love what they do.

Check out the video of Kate sharing our big dreams for more Cocoons.

Babes of Bridge It

Any day now, our Team Leader Sage will welcome her baby into the world.

Over the past few months we’ve watched Sage take on a leadership role while also preparing to become a mum. It’s been pretty special to see both things happen at once.

We can’t wait to meet the newest little member of the Bridge It community.

On the weekend, Bridge It’s team and young people joined MECCA team to take part in the Corporate Triathlon.

At Bridge It we believe in the power of radical collaboration. When organisations share values and work closely together, the impossible becomes possible.

Bridge It and MECCA M-POWER are aligned in our commitment to creating safe and beautiful homes for young people. Being able to show up together as one team in moments like this, reflects the kind of partnership we’ve built.

Thanks to the MECCA team for a great day!

We have an exciting building project in St Kilda that will soon undergo extensive pro bono renovations, and we’re now looking for an experienced Project Manager to help bring it to life.

Plans have been submitted, and the next stage is turning drawings into action. We’re looking for someone who can coordinate between Bridge It and our builder, manage timelines, oversee approvals & technical coordination, and support the project through cost, risk, and governance management on behalf of Bridge It.

If you’re a construction or renovation project manager, or know someone who would be perfect for this role, we’d love to hear from you.

Either reach our directly to [email protected], DM us or tag someone who might be interested.

Words from our Wellness Mentor Cass, on what makes the Cocoon so powerful...

"There's something so special and powerful for me that we are getting to hold young people not only in their wins but in their darkest times and big spirals. They're staying connected with us which is just huge when many of them haven't had safe people to trust and stay connected to in those times. We're staying with them until they see the light at the end of the tunnel. This to me is one of the most unique things about Cocoon (and it's in our very name!). A caterpillar totally breaks down in the cocoon before it leaves as a butterfly – it's messy and raw and there are very few places that actually hold a space for that."

This is why we do what we do. 💛
