Rotary Melbourne Rotary Melbourne is Australia's first Rotary Club. Visiting Rotarians are most welcome. And we do this every day.

An ambitious new environmental project is taking shape in Melbourne’s north.
Tomorrow, Maggie McDonell, Co-Founder of The Melbourne Arboretum, joins us to share the vision for transforming 59 hectares at Mernda into a major native arboretum celebrating Australia’s extraordinary eucalypts, restoring habitat and creating new opportunities for education, research and community involvement.

We’ll also hear from special guest Richard Barley MBE, former Executive Director Gardens at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England.

🚶‍♂️ 250KM. ONE MONTH. ONE FINAL PUSH TO END POLIO.

Rotary Melbourne’s Robert Fisher is lacing up once again - challenging himself to walk 250 kilometres during October to help create a polio-free world.

Since 1988, wild polio cases have fallen by more than 99.9%. The virus now remains endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan - but until transmission stops everywhere, children everywhere remain at risk.

We are incredibly close. But close isn’t finished.

Every dollar donated to Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign is matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation - turning $1 into $3 for this lifesaving work.

🚨 INTEREST RATES TODAY. ANSWERS TOMORROW.

Economists expect the RBA to raise rates today for the fourth time this year - taking the cash rate to 4.60%, its highest level since 2011. Borrowers could face another rise before Christmas.

Then, less than 24 hours after today’s decision, Rotary Melbourne welcomes Professor Ian Harper AO - one of Australia’s most respected public-policy economists.

Ian is far more than a commentator. Until August, he sat on the RBA’s Monetary Policy Board. He also chaired Australia’s landmark Competition Policy Review, led the Australian Fair Pay Commission, co-founded Deloitte Access Economics and served as Dean of Melbourne Business School.

Tomorrow, he takes your questions.

🕊️ YOUNG PEOPLE DESIGNING PEACE

At last week’s lunch, Jessica Dudley from Young Change Agents introduced the Youth Peacebuilding Design Challenge.

In one-day workshops, students identify conflict or division in their communities, design a practical solution and pitch their idea. At Ashwood High School, students created a multicultural food event and a board game teaching conflict resolution.

Funded by the Rotary Club of Balwyn, the free national program is already engaging 2,500 young people across 64 schools.

Rotary Melbourne Honorary Member Associate Professor Tilman Ruff AM is the program’s ambassador.

Education can change the course of a young person’s life.

For nine years, Rotary Melbourne and Rotary District 9800 have partnered with Empowering Youth in Cambodia to help students in some of Phnom Penh’s most disadvantaged communities stay in school and pursue brighter futures.

Today, the scholarship program supports 87 secondary students and four university students; opening doors to education, leadership and meaningful employment.

As EYC celebrates 20 years, it’s also celebrating the people and partnerships making lasting change possible.
