Another big voice joins Strategic SA 2035.

Apartment owners want to make their buildings more sustainable. The rules need to make it possible.

AAA Founder Sam Reece has spoken with The Age about the very real challenges facing owners corporations trying to electrify older apartment buildings, including installing EV charging infrastructure and moving away from gas.

For many buildings, the issue is not a lack of willingness. It is the cost, technical complexity and regulatory barriers standing in the way.

AAA supports reducing the voting threshold from 75% to 50% for clearly defined sustainability measures, alongside stronger support for owners corporations to understand what upgrades are needed and how they can be delivered.

Sam also reinforced AAA’s support for the introduction of a Strata Commissioner in Victoria, including a role in administering grants that could help owners corporations undertake energy audits and make informed decisions about future upgrades.

If Victoria is serious about electrification and a more sustainable housing future, apartment communities cannot be left to navigate the transition alone.

Yesterday, we took the AAA Winners Tour to Victoria, bringing our community inside three standout projects recognised through the AAA Awards for Excellence.

From the considered design of Plant Street by Milieu Property, to the incredible Seafarers Penthouse by and the innovation behind Victoria Street Collective by , the day was an opportunity to see these award-winning projects up close and hear more about the thinking, design and delivery behind them.

There is something very different about experiencing a project in person. The details, the materials, the spaces and the decisions behind them all come to life in a way that simply cannot be captured on paper.

A huge thank you to our hosts for opening their doors and sharing their projects with us, and to everyone who joined us.

A fantastic way to celebrate the projects and people raising the standard of apartment living in Australia.

The future of housing will not be solved by doing more of the same.

AAA Founder Sam Reece recently joined the panel at the Timber Insight Conference in Perth to discuss the role of Modern Methods of Construction in delivering more affordable housing.

One of Sam’s key messages was clear: tackling the skills shortage requires us to think differently about both how we build and who we bring into the industry.

Greater adoption of robotics and advanced manufacturing, combined with increasing the participation of women across construction and related industries, has the potential to significantly broaden Australia’s workforce and help address long standing skills shortages.

Modern Methods of Construction are an important part of that future, creating opportunities to build more efficiently, improve productivity and rethink traditional approaches to housing delivery.

The recent $1.5 million State Government investment into the sector is a positive step and another sign of the growing momentum behind MMC.

Thank you to Timber Insight for bringing industry leaders together for such an important conversation.

Following last week’s investigation by The Age, which reported more than 3,500 complaints to Consumer Affairs Victoria over 10 years and not a single civil or criminal prosecution against a strata management firm, Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece is now adding his voice to calls for change.

For AAA, the message is clear. Victoria’s apartment owners need stronger consumer protection, meaningful enforcement and a dedicated Strata Commissioner with the power to hold the sector to account.

With more Victorians choosing apartment living, effective regulation cannot continue to lag behind.

Now is the time for genuine strata reform.
