The River Nile Learning Centre

The River Nile Learning Centre RNLC provides educational and self-development opportunities for migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women.

We provide hope and educational opportunities for refugee and asylum seeker women, and their children, to acquire the language, life and work skills to integrate and thrive in our community.

Every day, women from refugee, asylum seeker and migrant backgrounds walk through our doors looking for a safe place to learn, connect and belong.

For many, the River Nile Learning Centre is the first place in Australia where they feel truly seen and supported.

But right now, we need your help to keep those doors open.
Due to ongoing funding shortages, RNLC urgently needs to raise $30,000 by December to continue providing free English classes, food relief and wellbeing programs for women who have nowhere else to turn.

Every dollar helps keep classrooms open, food on the table and hope alive. 🌿

🌺One-on-one teaching support to our students🌺
At RNLC, we tailor our teaching support to suit the level and learning capacity of individual students by providing one-on-one teaching support and small group learning. Student Trang, who is originally from Vietnam, is happy and grateful to have the opportunity to improve her English with support from our longest-serving volunteer, Jennifer King. Jennifer has been coming to the centre once a week for over two years, contributing her time to help our students.

🌺New health education program launched 🌺
We are excited to announce that in term 3 we have introduced a new health education program for our students. Each week, health educators from our partner organisation, Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health, meet our students to share knowledge on everything from breast and cervical cancer screening to mental health, menopause, pregnancy choices, contraception and healthy relationships. Our students are enthusiastic to explore and gain new health knowledge while trying to learn and improve their English.

🌞🌹 Our morning walk in the market 🌻

Melbourne’s brutally cold weather doesn’t stop our students from exploring and engaging with the community through their weekly morning walks. This week, our students strolled to a market near RNLC, where they had a lovely break at a local café and did some vegetable shopping – our students love going to the market! These breaks from the classroom are not only fun, they are an opportunity for students to put the language skills they’re learning at RNLC into practice in the real world and build their confidence interacting with the community.

🌺🌻 Term 3 in full swing🌼🌸
The two-week break gave us time to bond with our families, friends and loved ones, but now our classrooms are filled with stories and laughter again. It’s great to see all of our students, volunteers and staff back with fresh smiles, ready to learn and work together as one big team toward positive changes.
