Women's Mental Health Australia

Women's Mental Health Australia Women's mental health leaders; investing in tailored mental health research, advocacy & education.

Women’s Mental Health Australia (WMHA) is the nation’s leading organisation dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for women across the lifespan. We exist to champion a world where gender is recognised as a key factor in mental health; where every woman, at every stage of life, is seen, heard and supported. Our mission is to address the often overlooked mental health challenges uniquely exp

erienced by women and girls. From menstruation to menopause, motherhood to caregiving, and everything in between, we advocate for gender-informed research, policy and mental health care that recognises how biology, life stages and social experiences shape mental health outcomes. We do this year-round through:
• Gender-specific research that addresses gender gaps in evidence for mental health conditions
• Advocacy initiatives to influence national mental health agendas, policy and reform
• Educational mental health programs and resources that support women and the professionals who care for them
• Awareness and collaboration with government, industry and community to drive meaningful, lasting change

Since 2010, our work has been powered by the success of the Liptember campaign – our flagship lipstick-wearing fundraiser held every September. What began as a conversation-starter has grown into a national movement, raising millions for women’s mental health initiatives and bringing greater awareness to the role gender plays in mental wellbeing and reducing stigma around help-seeking. Formerly known as the Liptember Foundation, we evolved into Women’s Mental Health Australia (WMHA) in 2025 to better reflect our mission with clarity.

Your tax-deductible contribution can change the future of mental health care for women and girls across Australia.

Through funding critical research, advocacy, education, and direct support services, you’re helping build a mental health system that listens to women and connects them with the right support at the right time.

Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. We’d be so grateful for your support. 🙌

This Infant Mental Health Awareness Week focuses on the theme of “Attunement”, highlighting how responsive, connected early relationships help shape babies’ development.

The week is an important opportunity to recognise the significance of infant mental health and the essential role of caregivers in supporting emotional wellbeing from the very beginning of life. 💙

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) has a new name: polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).

This updated name is more scientifically accurate and reflects that PMOS affects more than fertility, including a higher risk of metabolic and mental health conditions across the lifespan.

PMOS is linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm. Our research shows women with female-specific conditions experience significantly higher psychological distress than those with other physical health conditions or none.

Women’s health experts and people with lived experience believe the change could help improve future diagnosis and treatment, marking important progress 🙌

Happy Pride Month 🌈✨

This month is a celebration of diversity, self-expression and the freedom to live authentically, while also recognising the ongoing fight for equality, respect and inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Together, we can work towards a society where people are celebrated for who they are, not questioned for it.

This is especially important when it comes to mental health. Our research found that 1 in 5 women in the LGBTQIA+ community experiencing mental health challenges have reported thoughts of su***de or self-harm, more than double the rate seen in the general female population (9%).

It’s a powerful reminder that representation, visibility and acceptance truly matter.
