n me and my son on an unforgettable trip to Cairns as we explore accessible accommodation, transport and activities together.

In this video, I share the real experience of travelling as a quadriplegic father—from transferring out of my wheelchair and boarding the plane to getting around Cairns and enjoying memorable adventures with my son.

Not every resort or accommodation is completely wheelchair accessible, but sometimes simple solutions can make a big difference. We used furniture risers—often called “elephant feet”—to raise the bed and a small portable ramp to access the balcony safely.

This journey shows that accessible travel may require extra planning, creativity and the right support, but having a disability should not prevent anyone from travelling, creating memories and experiencing new adventures with their family.

I hope this video helps other wheelchair users and families feel more confident about exploring Cairns and travelling throughout Australia.

♿ Accessible travel is possible—sometimes we just need to find a different way.

🏠 CARE RENT ASSISTANCE — UP TO $450 PER FORTNIGHT

People with disability who require regular or around-the-clock support can face additional living expenses that other households may not experience.

Participants may need to rent a larger home with an additional bedroom or dedicated space for their support workers. They may also face increased electricity, gas, water, internet and other household expenses because carers are present in the home for extended periods.

Independence Care’s Care Rent Assistance program is designed to help eligible participants manage these disability-related living costs.

Eligible participants may receive up to $450 per fortnight to assist with:

🏡 The additional rental cost of providing a suitable room or space for carers
💡 Increased electricity, gas and water usage associated with care delivery
🌐 Additional internet and household utility expenses
♿ Maintaining a safe and appropriate home environment for ongoing support
💚 Reducing the financial pressure associated with receiving care at home

Each application is assessed individually based on the participant’s circumstances, eligibility requirements and available program funding. Assistance is not automatically available to every participant.

If you or someone you support experiences additional housing and utility costs because carers regularly provide support in the home, contact Independence Care to learn more about eligibility and the application process.

More support. Less financial pressure. Greater independence.

I decided to travel to the Great Barrier Reef to try scuba diving for the very first time. As a quadriplegic, I never imagined something like this would even be possible. But I refused to let my disability define my limits—and I made it happen.

It turned out to be one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Floating weightlessly underwater, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, was something I’ll never forget.

If you’ve ever doubted whether you can achieve something because of a disability, don’t give up before you try. You might surprise yourself.

I highly recommend giving it a go. Life begins where fear ends. 🌊♿🤿
