Truth Not War assume most of these events we're all familiar with or at least in part, but when listed chronologically, it really illustrates how relentlessly vicious we in the west have been for so long, and how arrogantly hypocritical this 2026 pursuit of bombing Persia "back to the stone age, where they belong" is just so incredibly humiliating and enraging...
Modern history of American intervention in Iran can largely be defined by the 1953 coup, decades of support for the Shah and subsequent efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic through everything from economic sanctions to direct military action.
Pre-Revolution & The Coup
• 1953 – CIA-Backed Coup (Operation Ajax): The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and British intelligence orchestrated the overthrow of democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh after he nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
• 1953-1979 – Support for the Shah: Following the coup, the U.S. reinstalled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, turning him into a key regional ally in the mid-east and supporting his authoritarian rule with comprehensive western military aid and intelligence training.
• 1957 – SAVAK Creation: The U.S. and Israel helped establish SAVAK, the Shah’s intelligence agency. SAVAK was later implicated in the torture and suppression of political dissidents.
• 1957 – Atoms for Peace: The U.S. signed a nuclear agreement with the Shah, *providing Iran with a nuclear reactor and fuel* initiating the collaboration that later became a massive point of contention.
The 1979 Revolution & Hostage Crisis
• 1979 – Iranian Revolution: Following the overthrow of the Shah, Ayatollah Khomeini took power, turning Iran into a theocratic republic and after such brazenly overt western meddling for so many years thereby designated the U.S. as the "Great Satan".
• 1979-1981 – Iran Hostage Crisis: Iranian students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage for 444 days in protest of U.S. support for the exiled Shah.
• 1980 – Operation Eagle Claw: A failed U.S. military mission to rescue the hostages resulted in the death of eight U.S. service members.
Proxy Wars & Escalation (1980s-1990s)
• 1980-1988 – Iran-Iraq War: The U.S. backed Iraq under Saddam Hussein, providing intelligence, economic aid, and dual-use technology to Iraq during its invasion of Iran.
• 1985-1987 – Iran-Contra Affair: During this same time the Reagan administration also secretly sold weapons to Iran to secure the release of American hostages in Lebanon, using the profits to illegally fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
• 1988 – Operation Praying Mantis: The U.S. Navy attacked Iranian oil platforms and ships in the Persian Gulf after an American ship struck an Iranian mine.
• 1988 – Downing of Iran Air 655: The USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian civilian airliner, killing all 290 passengers; the U.S. claimed it was a mistake.
• 1995 – Total Embargo: The Clinton administration imposed a total trade and oil embargo on Iran, accusing it of sponsoring terrorism.
Nuclear Disputes & Direct Conflict (2000s-2026)
• 2002 – "Axis of Evil": President George W. Bush labeled Iran part of an "axis of evil," escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.
• 2015 – Nuclear Deal (JCPOA): The Obama administration signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), lifting sanctions in exchange for openly agreed limits on Iran's nuclear program.
• 2018 – Withdrawal from JCPOA: President Trump tore up the U.S. instigated JCPOA nuclear deal and implemented a "Maximum Pressure" campaign, restoring original strict economic sanctions.
• 2019 – IRGC Designation: The U.S. formally designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
• 2020 – Assassination of Qasem Soleimani: A U.S. drone strike in Baghdad killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, leading to Iranian missile retaliation on U.S. bases in Iraq. Iran ensured no casualties by forewarning U.S. intelligence.
• 2025 – Nuclear Site Attacks: The U.S. and Israel launched attacks on several Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025, which President Trump claimed "totally obliterated" the program.
2026 – (Operation Epic Fury) During ongoing negotiations February, the U.S. and Israel collaborated in an unprovoked, illegal war of aggression against Iran, targeting military, nuclear, leadership and civilian infrastructure sites such as schools, hospitals and bridges. Openly admitting in advance through state media the clear intent to commit war crimes, sadly with apparent impunity.
Based on net search community knowledge and of course paying attention to history - we can only do so much. The above is merely partial. Over 80 years many treacheries hide in the cracks between corporate media interests and lack of memory. Cultural attacks demonstrated on the world stage such as antagonistically shifting western embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, or systematic luring/targeting of high-level negotiators on the eve of conflict in order to commit murder before talks could proceed etc LETS ALL CONTRIBUTE. It takes a village.
