The Rank the Energy Retailer 2025 project is a collaborative initiative coordinated by Financial Counselling Victoria in partnership with Energy Consumers Australia, Financial Counselling Australia and Consumer Policy Research Centre, with support from each State and Territory financial counselling peak association — Financial Counsellors Association NSW, Financial Counsellors' Association WA (FCAWA), South Australian Financial Counsellors Association, Financial Counselling Queensland, Financial Counsellors ACT and Financial Counsellors Tasmania.

The report captures the insights of over 260 financial counsellors across Australia and highlights significant differences in how energy retailers support people experiencing financial hardship. It’s a powerful snapshot of what’s working — and what urgently needs to change.

Across Australia, many households are feeling the squeeze of rapidly escalating costs of living, including energy bills.

That's why FCVic is proud to announce a new project, 'Rank the Energy Retailer 2025 – Assessing hardship policies and practices of energy retailers to remove barriers to affordable energy'. This project will use survey data from financial counsellors across Australia to provide critical insights into how energy retailers support customers experiencing financial hardship.

Delivered in partnership with Financial Counselling Australia and the Consumer Policy Research Centre, and with support from other financial counselling state peaks, this project was funded by Energy Consumers Australia as part of its Grants Program to support consumer advocacy and research projects that benefit household and small business consumers.

We're excited to contribute to driving improvements in energy retailer practices and advocating for fairer systems for households. Stay tuned for updates as the project progresses!

Today, 26 November, marks International Economic Abuse Awareness Day, a time to raise awareness about economic abuse and advocate for systemic change. The 2024 theme, There’s no excuse for economic abuse, was chosen by the International Coalition Against Economic Abuse and inspired by the United Nations' campaign to end violence against women.

This year, the Non-Payment of Child Support as a Form of Economic Abuse Working Group is focusing on raising awareness of child support non-payment as a form of economic abuse. This alliance of women’s legal, financial counselling, and economic rights organisations calls attention to the systemic harm caused when child support is withheld.

The group’s efforts build on the findings of Women’s Legal Services Australia's recent research paper, Non-Payment of Child Support as Economic Abuse of Women and Children: A Literature Review (2024). This research highlights the urgent need for reforms to address economic abuse and systemic violence against women and children in Australia. is pervasive where is present; it's a potent tactic to manifest power and control over someone else, and it makes it harder for the abused person to leave the relationship. For people in this situation, free and confidential help from financial counsellors is available via National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 or ndh.org.au
