The Victorian Forest Survey group is documenting hollow-bearing tree collapse in a recent planned burn just outside Kinglake National Park. A huge number have been destroyed, no longer providing crucial habitat for threatened species like phascogales. A government study from 2016 shows on average 25% of hollow bearing trees collapse in planned burns and many more are damaged, making them more likely to collapse in the next fire. “Stag trees” are most vulnerable to collapse in a planned burns because they have lots of hollows and exposed deadwood which are entry points for even low severity fire.
