2.1% of older adults experience financial exploitation, with trusted family members or carers frequently identified as the primary culprit. Examples include unauthorised use of elder’s funds, coercion regarding changes to wills, or the misuse of active powers of attorney.

Financial abuse is not just about lost money.

The Eden Alternative highlights seven domains of wellbeing essential for a meaningful life, and financial exploitation destroys two critical pillars: Security and Autonomy.

Financial abuse directly strips away an elders autonomy. When someone misuses a Power of Attorney or controls an elder's bank account, they rob them of this core domain. They are stealing that person's voice and independence. Financial abuse fosters deep helplessness by making older adults dependent on others for basic survival.

Financial abuse also destroys an elder’s security and overall quality of life.

The Eden Alternative defines security as freedom from doubt, anxiety, or fear. It means feeling safe, having privacy, and knowing your future is protected. When an older adult is financially exploited, that security vanishes. They are left with worry about whether they can afford basic healthcare, food, or their own home.

Psychological Abuse is the most frequently reported form of elder abuse, effecting 11.7% of elders. As it leaves no physical marks it remains one of the hardest areas of abuse to quantify.

The reality involves patterns of behaviour that inflict anguish, pain or distress through verbal and non verbal acts. Examples include verbal degradation, intimidation, threats, insults, humiliation, gaslighting or isolation from family or friends.

Emotional and Psychological Abuse impacts wellbeing, directly deconstructing the domains of identity (the right to be recognised as an individual) and connectedness (access to social networks).

Humiliation, threats or the silent treatment, strip away an elder’s identity and sense of worth. When an elders social links are severed their capacity to report other forms of mistreatment drop significantly.

There is nothing to be ashamed of about experiencing elder abuse or taking action to put a stop to it.

Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA), a specialist organisation working to eliminate elder abuse, and their national support service can be reached on 1800 353 374.

While annual awareness days start a conversation, data from the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) indicates that elder abuse requires a deeper look.

Studies show that 1 in 6 older Australians living in the community experience some form of abuse annually, yet 2 in 3 suffer entirely in silence.

Elder abuse can be financial, emotional or psychological, physical, sexual, or neglect.
Elder abuse can include one or a combination of the different types of abuse.
Elder abuse can be intentional or unintentional. Most often the abuse is carried out by someone known to the older person.
Elder abuse affects people of all genders and all walks of life.

Over the next five weeks, this series will examine how different types of elder abuse interact with The Seven Eden Domains of Wellbeing.

At our recent Tribes of Eden session we had the pleasure of hosting and listening to from .

Wendy explained how she created the dementia doula role over 10 years ago to provide continuous support for people with dementia and their families from pre-diagnosis through to end-of-life, addressing gaps in compassionate care that she observed in the healthcare system.

She also described the role as focusing on psychosocial support, education, and advocacy for families, working alongside existing services rather than replacing them.

Wendy shared what a Dementia Doula role can fulfill as we all navigate the journey for both families and the person living with dementia.

Our conversation explored opportunities for embedding dementia doulas into staffing models and the importance of supporting families throughout the dementia journey, with participants agreeing on the value of the role as a complementary service to existing care structures.
