Sexual abuse remains the most hidden and least discussed form of elder mistreatment, and research establishes that women aged 65 and over are disproportionately targeted.

Sexual Abuse encompasses any non-consensual sexual contact, activity, or language. It includes situations where an elder has a cognitive impairment and is incapable of giving legal consent.

Non-consensual acts involve forcing something upon a person who did not agree.

The impact of sexual abuse on wellbeing is devastating.
It is a violation of autonomy, and an assault on an elder’s Identity and Security. It strips away their bodily dignity, violates their personal history, and instils a profound state of fear and vulnerability.

An elder's environment must protect their personal identity and provide absolute safety.

There is nothing to be ashamed of about experiencing elder abuse or taking action to put a stop to it.

Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA), a specialist organisation working to eliminate elder abuse, and their national support service can be reached on 1800 353 374.

Physical Abuse affects 1.8% of elders in Australia.

Physical abuse doesn’t just leave physical scars. It completely violates the core Eden domains of wellbeing - security and autonomy.

We can’t talk about wellbeing without ensuring people are free from fear and free to make their own choices.
