🆕 New guidance for managing the risks of workplace exposure to diesel engine emissions now available.

We've published new guidance to help workplaces identify, assess and manage the risks of exposure to diesel engine emissions.

From 1 December 2026, a new workplace exposure limit of 0.01 mg/m3 for diesel particulate matter (diesel engine emissions) will be introduced as part of Australia’s transition to the Workplace Exposure Limits for Airborne Contaminants (WEL) List.

Diesel engine emissions can pose serious risks to workers’ health, including lung disease and cancer.

Our new ‘Guide to managing the risks of exposure to diesel engine emissions in the workplace’ helps employers manage the WHS risks of diesel engine emission exposure and comply with the upcoming exposure limit.

If you work in environments where you or your workers may be exposed to diesel engine emissions, such as mining, quarrying, tunnelling, construction, agriculture, transport and logistics, oil and gas, and vehicle maintenance, this new guidance is for you 🚛🏭

Are you an employer who needs to manage exposure to airborne contaminants?

We have published a new guide to help employers understand their obligations and prepare for the transition to workplace exposure limits.

From 1 December 2026, employers must ensure that no person at their workplace is exposed to an airborne contaminant at a level above the exposure limit in the workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants list.

Our ‘Guide for PCBUs: Air monitoring and the workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants’ explains:
🔶 when air monitoring may be required
🔶 how to engage a competent person to undertake monitoring
🔶 what to do with monitoring results, and

⚠️From 1 December 2026, Australia will adopt a new Workplace Exposure Limit of 0.01 mg/m³, as an eight-hour TWA for diesel particulate matter measured as respirable elemental carbon.
