I love dance for the physicality, the ability to explore emotion and storytelling through movement, and also the connection to the other performers and the audience.

It is a very special time when creating as a team, whether creating your own work, or facilitating someone else’s vision, to watch the room work, and share their creations and ideas openly, and to see every different ’Take’ on a task.
There’s so many wonderful things that happen during a process, it is often where some of my favourite memories come from!

β€œI’ve titled this workshop β€˜In-between Bodies and Things.’ Together we will explore an interdisciplinary choreographic method developed by a collective of visual and dance artists that I am part of based in Croatia - MOLD kolektiv. Our practice focused on process, is relational and speculative. We will play with objects, exploring both their material properties and movement-potential, before translating our investigations into choreographic principles for organising bodies into movement and dance.”

✨ Want to learn from Kimball Wong? ✨

The third piece of the CTRL + ALT + CREATE edition choreographic puzzle.

Kimballs workshop will give participants a chance to experience some of the choreographic vocabulary he has acquired through working with many different choreographers and artists, particularly focussing on his experience working with Stephanie Lake Company

Kimball was born in New Zealand and moved to England at a young age where he trained at the Millennium School for Performing Arts. Before travelling to Australia he worked with, Michael Clark, and Phoenix Dance Theatre.Β 

In 2007 he joined the Australian Dance Theatre under the directorship of Garry Stewart. He was with ADT for 14 years, performing and developing such works as G, Be Your Self, Proximity, Multiverse, Objekt, Habitus and The Beginning of Nature.

Kimball has received multiple nominations for his roles in these works and awards for:
β€’ Australian Dance Awards - Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer for Proximity (2013) and The Beginning of Nature (2018)
β€’ Helpmann Award for Best Male Dancer in a Physical Theatre or Ballet for Habitus (2016)
β€’ Green Room Award for Best Male Performer for Be Your Self (2019)

Kimball has recently worked with Steph Lake on The Chronicles, Manifesto, Monsters and was a rehearsal director for the creation of Circle Electric on the Australian Ballet.

✨ Introducing Tomas Arroquero ✨

Tomas spent over 20 years training and working as a dancer in Spain. He has worked in theatre and tablao settings across Spain and Europe and collaborated with numerous companies in Madrid, the UK and Germany.Β 

Tomas performed for 6-years as a soloist with the London-based company Flamenco Express. He teaches Flamenco internationally and continues to have a presence in the UK and Hong Kong.

Since 2012 Tomas completed several postgraduate studies, shifting flamenco into the broader context of contemporary dance making, including a Graduate Research Master of Fine Arts (Dance) at the University of Melbourne. These studies opened up rich territory for him to stretch the boundaries of the form, renegotiating flamenco’s defining characteristics.

𝗔𝗕𝗒𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗒𝗠𝗔𝗦’ 𝗖𝗧π—₯π—Ÿ + π—”π—Ÿπ—§ + 𝗖π—₯π—˜π—”π—§π—˜ π—ͺ𝗒π—₯π—žπ—¦π—›π—’π—£:

Inclusive and experimental, Tomas’s workshop will approach choreography through the basic principles and aesthetics of flamenco. You’ll journey though the structure of a dance, body orientation, shapes and rhythms.

Beginning with a guided practice in placement and grounding awareness, we will explore the sensibility of flamenco through both body percussion and movement. You will be an active participant in your own decision-making process; responding, listening and realising your own potential. This is followed by an exploration of more abstract concepts; impulsivity, courage and flamenco stereotypes, making discoveries that will deepen our relationship to movement and self.
