The Hospice provides emergency and ongoing loving care for up to 12 chickens at a time. Hospice patients arrive in various states of poor health from broken bones, dog attacks, cancerous tumours, egg yolk peritonitis, starvation and neglect. The chickens receive the best of veterinary care, compassion and 24/7 nursing. Nicole arranges her life and her work as a Dog Trainer / Behaviourist around t

he needs of the chickens. When Nicole can't be home professional animal carer Happier Pets steps in to care for the crew so they are never alone.

Chickens who recover are adopted out to the very best homes. Those who are palliative receive end of life care specific to their individual needs. Rosie's Hospice is a peaceful and safe place for animals to transition to the next life.

We hold a weekly meditation group for animal carers and have recently hosted a self compassion workshop for animal carers and activists. The Hospice is named after Rosie Hen. The bravest little hen who despite suffering so much cruelty recovered to live a wonderful life full of love and adventure. Rosie passed away in 2017 but her spirit was felt strongly by her friend and carer Nicole and this inspired Nicole to convert her home into a hospice - Rosie's Hospice of Compassion. As well as the chickens, the hospice is home to 12 rescued guinea pigs, 3 senior rescue dogs, a personality packed flock of flightless pigeons and several rehabilitated wild birds who now live freely in the garden. The Hospice is self funded and holds twice yearly Meet The Chickens Picnics which are loads of fun as well as a chicken vaccination program to assist with operational costs.

Mary is a liberated broiler hen, born in an industrial incubator and never raised by a mother.
When she became broody, something ancient stirred inside her. She gathered eggs, determined to hatch a baby even though no one had ever shown her how to be one.
At the same time, two tiny chicks, hatched for a short-term nursing home hatching project, needed a home.
Mary took them in.
She became the mother she never had.
Lewis and Lina are now safe and loved and have been adopted by Melissa Pawsitive Animal Therapies. This is a rare outcome in a world where 50% of hatched chicks are male and roosters are the hardest to rehome.
Chickens feel. Chickens mother. Chickens love.

This piece was inspired by my good friends after visiting and my dear friend Nicole. The concept was what was Tilt before and after his incredible earth bound journey with Nicole. It was so much fun to think of Tilt as his higher aspect as an intergalactic magician creating the rambunctious rooster he became, these aspects of his personality are the many sprites and figures betweens his arms. His favourite dog friend Bodhi is held close to his heart aswell as his favourite plant which was a succulent. When creating Tilts wizard jacket I decided to add commentary about something Tilt illuminated by his life, its the human shadow of our greed and the message came to me that humanity has become just eyes with teeth. The message behind eyes with teeth for me meaning how we look at everything in this reality as something to exploit for $ no matter how innocent and special it is. Eyes with teeth looks at the innocent baby chick's calling for love and only evaluating how it gain from them. The box of chickies are cramped and crammed into a cardboard box which is common in the chicken meat/egg industry for transporting, its as though they are an inanimate object that cannot feel and isn't thinking and feeling being. The objects orbiting the eyes with teeth are the many explanations of why humans become eyes with teeth, some of those are money, taste, habit, convenience creating wealth for share holders and tradition. The reasons continues to perpetuates and powers eyes with teeth blinds it to compassion and empathy. This eyes with teeth came from a conversation with Nicole asking her is Tilt was afraid of anything and she had to think hard about it and told me when they were driving he used to get nervous about trucks and was probably some of his earliest memories when he was only a few days old being transported in probably similar to the box. There is the lights of a truck next to the light. Tilts gaze was a projection of the timeline when he was Tilt living as a rooster and I tried to capture her full of compassion thats gives everything to the souls❤️ ⚫️
