Police have seized about $580,000 cash and charged a southern Tasmanian man as part of an ongoing joint operation targeting alleged drug distribution syndicates in Tasmania.

The operation falls under the Tasmania Joint Organised Crime Taskforce (JOCTF), which combines the resources and capabilities of the AFP, Tasmania Police and Australian Border Force.

As part of the operation, JOCTF investigators intercepted the 31-year-old man driving his vehicle near Melton Mowbray, on the Midland Highway. They executed a search warrant on his car and allegedly located a significant amount of cash contained in sealed plastic bags inside a cooler bag. Authorities seized the cash, which was forensically examined and estimated to be about $580,000.

The AFP is aware of scam emails circulating that claim to be sent by the AFP, including from Commissioner Reece Kershaw.

The emails warn recipients they’re being investigated for various crimes and may include a fake subpoena or summons.

We will never contact members of the community in this manner. These are scams.
