There has been considerable misinformation and wilful ignorance being perpetuated by the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions as part of their National Wild Dog Action Plan about recent dingo DNA research. They have been deliberately attempting to weaponise recent research findings to place pressure on government to scrap any scant protection for dingoes and increase lethal control.

Here are the facts as reported by the various leading DNA scientists / First Nations and others.

In May 2026 a team of Australian scientists sent a letter (see below to read it) to Environment and Agriculture Ministers in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, outlining recent advances in dingo genomics and their implications for policy and management.T...

Groundbreaking new archaeological evidence is reshaping what we know about the relationship between dingoes and First Nations people โ€” and it tells a story of deep love, respect and kinship.

Researchers investigating a ~1,000-year-old dingo burial site along the Baaka (Darling River) on Barkindji Country discovered something never before documented anywhere in the world: a possible ongoing "feeding ritual", where generations of people continued adding river mussel shells to the burial site for hundreds of years after the dingo was laid to rest.

This was not a "pest animal". This was not a disposable creature. This was a being remembered, honoured and kept connected to Country long after death.

Even more moving, the male dingo had suffered severe injuries โ€” broken ribs and a broken leg, likely from hunting kangaroos โ€” yet he survived. Researchers believe he had been cared for and nursed back to health by the community. That alone speaks volumes about the bond that existed.

Barkindji custodians describe the ongoing shell additions as a way of maintaining connection and respecting ancestors. Dingoes were companions, hunting partners, family members and cultural beings woven into life on Country. Some Barkindji people still carry dingo as a totem today, despite dingoes being regionally exterminated from that area.

MORE EVIDENCE THAT ARE NOT

Note: This research was funded by the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions that run the National Wild Dog Action Plan. Their aim with this research was an attempt to discredit the groundbreaking work of Dr Kylie Cairns Dingo Genetics Research instead their findings absolutely support her findings:

โœ”๏ธ Dingoes are a genetically distinct wild Canid species.
โœ”๏ธ They do not form one homogeneous population - there are separate evolutionary lineages of dingoes across mainland Australia that have been shaped by nature over thousands of years.
โœ”๏ธ Dingoes retain their genetic distinctiveness inspite of (potentially) some small historic fragments of domestic dog ancestry.
โœ”๏ธ Given that are a distinct native species and retain their genetic distinction, they need to be correctly labelled as and not with 'future efforts to manage these animals should be done by region, working alongside First Nations communities.'

Ancient and modern dingo DNA reveals eight genetically distinct groups of dingoes โ€“ and the limited influence of domestic dog genes.
