Here’s what you need to know for now about COVID-19 vaccines moving from the National COVID-19 Vaccine Program (NCVP) to the National Immunisation Program (NIP) ✅

🗓️ The change isn’t happening until 1 October 2026. For now, COVID-19 vaccines remain available under the current NCVP arrangements 💉💉

Are you planning your travel vaccines? Check if you need a measles vaccine too! The number of measles infections is increasing in Australia and all around the world 📈 🌏 Overseas travel is the most significant source of infection for Australians ✈️

For everyone born in 1966 or later, 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine are required to be protected 🛡️

If you don’t know your vaccination history, it’s safe to get the vaccine! ✅

And if you’re travelling with an infant, make sure they’re protected too!

✈️ Infants as young as 6 months who are travelling are recommended to have an MMR vaccine.
🗓️ If they are aged 6 to 11 months, this will be an extra dose before their routine 12-month and 18-month doses
🗓️ If they are between 11 and 12 months it will count as their 12-month dose then they will complete their 18-month dose as normal.

‼️ Important: the measles vaccine (MMR) is a live-attenuated vaccine – it is not safe for people with immunocompromise, or for pregnant people ‼️

🌷🌿🌼 Counting the days until spring!
If you haven’t had an influenza vaccine yet in 2026 it’s not too late!

The flu vaccine:
💉 is updated every year to provide effective protection against current strains
💉 is recommended for everyone > 6 months
💉 is free for many Australians.

The flu:
🦠 circulates every year, usually peaking from June to September in Australia
🦠 can lead to serious complications and hospitalisation
🦠 can be very inconvenient (think cancelled holidays, medication costs, sick/carers leave).

World Hepatitis Day is observed every year to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer.

This year’s theme is ‘Hepatitis: Let’s break it down’ – a call to remove the barriers that stand between people and the services that can save their lives.

The tools needed to eliminate viral hepatitis already exist, including effective vaccines.

🐮 Why do we love cows so much at the Melbourne Vaccine Education Centre?

💉 Because of their important role in the development of vaccines of course!

The first ‘vaccine’ was invented after Edward Jenner noticed that people who were infected with cowpox also had immunity to smallpox! Thankfully the vaccine manufacturing process is much more stringent these days!
