Elder Rights Australia

Elder Rights Australia Elder Rights Advocacy supports older people, their families and representatives in Victoria address issues related to Commonwealth funded aged care services.

Our service is free, independent and confidential. We believe that older people have a right to express their opinion and receive respect. Our job is to listen and support you and your family to identify and advocate for solutions that best respond to your circumstances. Sometimes this involves us advocating strongly to an aged care service and challenging them to provide better care. We are a mem

ber of the national Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), delivering the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP). Our Purpose
We support older people’s right to quality care. Our Vision
A diverse, vibrant, multicultural community, where older people are respected, heard and well-informed, and can exercise their rights and responsibilities with confidence. Our Values
Respect: We listen, treat people with fairness and seek to understand others’ perspectives, experiences and contributions. Integrity: We act in a professional and ethical manner at all times. Collaboration: We value our people and the people we work with. Inclusiveness: We support diversity and ensure that everyone feels valued, welcome and included. Empowerment: We provide the people who seek information and support from us with accurate information, which supports them to understand their rights, responsibilities and options. Responsiveness: We are approachable and take pride in what we do.

This week marks National Reconciliation Week, held from 27 May to 3 June. These dates recognise two important milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey, the 1967 Referendum and the historic Mabo decision.
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect, learn and acknowledge our shared histories, cultures and achievements. It is also a reminder that reconciliation is something we all have a role in through listening, learning, respect and action.
The 2026 theme, “All In”, is a powerful reminder that reconciliation requires commitment every single day, not just during one week of the year. It calls on all Australians to stand together, walk together and continue creating a future built on truth, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge the strength, resilience, and enduring cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We remember the Stolen Generations and the lasting impact of these injustices across generations. Saying sorry is not just about the past; it’s about
reflecting on how we can each contribute to healing, through listening, learning, and respect.
Let’s walk forward together with honesty, humility, and care.

On April 29, ERA Advocacy Team Leader Brenda was invited to speak at the National Dementia Conference, held at the Crown Conference Centre in Melbourne.
This important event brought together leading experts, people with lived experience, carers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers—all committed to advancing dementia care, diagnosis, and treatment.
This marked the second time ERA has presented at this conference and on this occasion, Brenda shared a case study highlighting the critical role of person-centred care, and the importance of upholding the Statement of Rights in every interaction with residents.
It was a valuable opportunity to contribute to meaningful conversations and continue advocating for dignity, respect, and quality care in the aged care sector.

Elder Rights Australia and Celebrate Ageing Ltd invite artists of all ages to participate in our World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Art Competition.

The competition focuses on capturing the little or large ways older women are given or shown respect in families, community, groups, the workplace, services, and government and calls for people to share art about what respect for older women looks like.

The aim of the competition is to help promote awareness that respect for older women matters – and is a reasonable expectation.

The theme is Reasonable Expectations: What respect for Older Women looks like. How the theme is shown is entirely up to the artist. We invite you to consider including the colour orange – a colour that represents respect. Entries can be created using:
• Traditional media: pencil, pen, crayon, charcoal, oil, acrylic, watercolors or mixed media.
• Digital art: illustrations, designs or digital compositions, photographs
• Performance art: dance, original poetry, or spoken word poetry.
Art may be submitted in any form, including digital media, physical art (paintings, drawings, sketches, mixed media art) or video recordings of original poetry. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design or ex*****on of the artwork is not permitted.

All entries must be received by Friday 15th May 2026 at 4pm AEDT time to [email protected]

Three finalists will be selected by the board members of Elder Rights Australia and announced in May 2026 on social media.

Winners will be announced on WEAD 2026 (June 15th) via the Celebrate Ageing Ltd and Elder Rights Australia social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram.
Prizes are 4 x $250 gift vouchers.
The competition is part of the Blueprint on Respect for Older Women in Victoria, funded by the Victorian Women’s Trust.

We can't wait to see your creativity come to life!
