AHPA is celebrating Allied Health Professions Day today, recognising the contributions of allied health professionals and calling for their expertise to be more accessible to Australians at every stage of life.

Allied health is Australia’s second-largest clinical workforce, delivering a vast scope of health services including supporting children’s development, helping people manage chronic conditions and mental health needs, providing disability supports, and helping older Australians maintain their independence and quality of life.

This year’s theme, “Allied health: For everyone, everywhere”, celebrates the diversity of the professions and the breadth of their work across hospitals, health services, private practices, schools, workplaces, aged care services, homes and communities.

AHPA Chief Executive Officer Bronwyn Morris-Donovan said the theme also reflected a vision for a healthier Australia.

“Allied health professionals make an extraordinary contribution every day, helping Australians move, communicate, participate, recover and live well,” Ms Morris-Donovan said.

“Today, we celebrate their expertise and dedication, and we want to highlight the enormous, untapped potential of this workforce to improve Australians’ health.”

🎉 A landmark win for allied health students.

Today the Australian Government announced the Commonwealth Prac Payment will expand to ten allied health professions from 1 July 2027 – a direct result of a national campaign backed by more than 43,000 Australians.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported the campaign, particularly to Senator David Pocock and Dr Helen Haines MP for their sustained advocacy, to our member organisations who campaigned alongside us every step of the way, and to every student who bravely shared their story about choosing between rent and finishing their degree.

When Australia's second largest health workforce speaks with one voice, government listens.

There's more work to do, and we won't stop until every allied health student is covered.

More than 43,000 Australians have called for action on placement poverty.

Last week, Dr Helen Haines MP presented our petition to Parliament, calling for the Commonwealth Prac Payment to be expanded to all allied health and medical students.

More than 43,000 Australians have called for the Commonwealth Prac Payment to be expanded to all allied health and medical students.

AHPA joined Dr Helen Haines MP and Senator David Pocock at Parliament this morning ahead of the tabling of the petition later today to call for progress on ending placement poverty.

Allied health students are essential to Australia’s future workforce, yet too many are being pushed to breaking point. Placement poverty is hitting hardest for students from rural and regional areas, mature‑age students with caring responsibilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and anyone already under financial pressure.

Expanding the Commonwealth Prac Payment to include all allied health and medical students is a practical, immediate step the Government can take to help secure a sustainable workforce across the NDIS, aged care and health systems.

AHPA thanks the parliamentarians standing with students and the sector today. The strength of this petition shows the community expects action.
