Theatre isn’t always comfortable, and it shouldn’t be. 🎭

We just wrapped an incredible workshop on moving from Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces with the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria’s Education and Support Subcommittee. While safe spaces are a vital foundation for protection, we explored how staying in a “comfort zone” can actually limit our creative growth.

The Key Takeaways:
• Comfort vs. Safety: There is a big difference between feeling “uncomfortable” and feeling “unsafe”. Discomfort is often where the most fulfilling creative work happens.
• Courage Over Armour: A brave space is where we take off our “armour” of politeness and perfectionism to have honest, generative conversations.
• Acknowledging Power: For a space to be truly brave, we have to name the power dynamics in the room from the Board to the Stage Door.

Why this matters for Theatre Leaders:
As leaders, our job isn’t just to be “nice.” It’s to be clear and kind. When we normalize making mistakes and challenging ideas (not people!), we build a culture where everyone actually belongs, rather than just being “invited”.

Let’s stop protecting the status quo and start protecting the art.

Be You Ed is excited to be presenting Maybe This Time again in 2026 and we’re looking for our next cohort of 12 emerging artists.

At Be You Group, we believe that being a professional performer requires more than just talent. Our research shows that many artists leave the industry not because they aren’t “good enough,” but because they run into four specific systemic barriers: money, access, workplace culture, and mental exhaustion.

Maybe This Time (MTT) is a professional development program designed to help you navigate these obstacles.

MTT will hone your skills in:

Preparation
Communication
Wellbeing

All essential to a sustainable performance career!

Be You was born out of frustration - and hope.

Frustration with seeing talented people crushed by bad leadership.
Hope that there’s a better way to make theatre - one built on trust, collaboration, and care.

This new article explores what great leadership looks like in a rehearsal room, using The Leadership Challenge’s 10 Commitments as a guide. It’s for directors, creatives, and anyone who believes the way we treat people matters as much as the art we create.

We didn’t start Be You after a brilliant rehearsal period. We started it after a terrible one.The director wasn’t untalented. They had skill. But they lacked leadership. They didn’t model the behaviour they expected. They didn’t share vision. They micromanaged every choice, even outside their...

A director without emotional intelligence is just a manager with a megaphone.

Too many directors manage, but don’t lead.
And in theatre, that difference is everything.

The director isn’t just staging a show. They’re managing people one moment, leading them the next. Cast, creatives, crew – everyone looks to them. Which means emotional intelligence isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the job description.

We’ve seen productions sink because a director was hired for “vision” alone. We’ve also seen casts thrive because the director knew how to lead with self-awareness, empathy, and people skills. Guess which one created the show everyone remembers fondly?

So, what does emotionally intelligent leadership look like in a rehearsal room?

Self-awareness – knowing the weight of your role and being honest about your strengths and blind spots.
Self-regulation – keeping your cool when things don’t go to plan (because they won’t).
Motivation – showing up with energy and resilience, even after a tough rehearsal.
Empathy – taking time to understand how your people are really feeling.
Social skill – building rapport, not just with decision-makers, but with everyone.

Directors with these qualities don’t just “get the show on.” They inspire people to give their best, and they make the process one worth remembering.

Because theatre, at its core, is people.

So, here’s our question: when you think about great leadership – whether in theatre, business, or anywhere else – which of these qualities stands out most to you?
