Theatre isn’t always comfortable, and it shouldn’t be. 🎭
We just wrapped an incredible workshop on moving from Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces with the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria’s Education and Support Subcommittee. While safe spaces are a vital foundation for protection, we explored how staying in a “comfort zone” can actually limit our creative growth.
The Key Takeaways:
• Comfort vs. Safety: There is a big difference between feeling “uncomfortable” and feeling “unsafe”. Discomfort is often where the most fulfilling creative work happens.
• Courage Over Armour: A brave space is where we take off our “armour” of politeness and perfectionism to have honest, generative conversations.
• Acknowledging Power: For a space to be truly brave, we have to name the power dynamics in the room from the Board to the Stage Door.
Why this matters for Theatre Leaders:
As leaders, our job isn’t just to be “nice.” It’s to be clear and kind. When we normalize making mistakes and challenging ideas (not people!), we build a culture where everyone actually belongs, rather than just being “invited”.
Let’s stop protecting the status quo and start protecting the art.
