Having raised joint statements issued by Assyrian, Syriac and Chaldean groups in the Parliament of Victoria, I’ve met with Minister Ingrid Stitt MP to discuss the important messages and values encapsulated in those statements.

Foundational values we share as Australians, like the rejection of violence; support for the rule of law and of liberty; and the freedom of communities and individuals to practice their faith without fear or hindrance.

Thank you to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs for meeting with me and for reasserting the Victorian Government’s deep commitment to working closely with the Assyrian, Chaldean and Syriac communities and to promoting and investing in our shared values.

I was also grateful for the Minister’s ongoing work to engage with places of worship and faith leaders across the state and to ensure their safety and security.

This ANZAC Day Assyrian-Australians honour the life and legacy of the great Australian and saviour of 50,000 Assyrians, Lieutenant General Sir Stanley George Savige. He served Australia in both world wars, fought at Gallipoli and founded Legacy Australia.

He commanded an operation which saved more than 50,000 Assyrians from certain death during WWI. Following the capture of Urmia by the Ottoman army, Savige discovered tens of thousands of fleeing Assyrian refugees. He, along with a small group of volunteers from the Dunsterforce along with refugees, formed a rearguard to hold back the Persian and Kurdish militias who were murdering the refugees and carrying off the young girls as slaves.

According to famous war historian Charles Bean, "The stand made by Savige and his eight companions that evening and during half of the next day against hundreds of the enemy thirsting like wolves to get at the defenceless throng was as fine as any episode known to the present writer in the history of this war."

The Assyrian people will forever honour and revere Lieutenant General Sir Stanley George Savige who established the century-old bond between the Assyrian and Australian peoples.

Today, we pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of the brave men and women who served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the spirit of comradeship and resilience that defines our nations. Lest we forget the valour and commitment of those who have laid down their lives for our freedom. 🌹

We strongly condemn the atrocious attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and urgently call for immediate, decisive action from the Australian government. Such heinous acts of violence have no place in our society and must be addressed swiftly to ensure safety and justice for all. We stand in solidarity with Bishop Emmanuel during this difficult time and fervently pray for his rapid and complete recovery. 🙏🏽
