🏎️🏆 Congratulations Team Quasar!

A huge congratulations to William and his Year 9 teammates from Brighton Grammar on an incredible 2nd place at their recent cup event!

We were thrilled to support the team after William approached us following a Rethink Recycling incursion. The team used our recycled plastic sheets to create the backboards of their display, and we also sponsored 30 carabiners for them to give away.

William told us: "Ultimately, we came second by only 20 points in a competition that can have over 1000 points up for grabs, and we really could not have done it without the support of Rethink Recycling. Having the backboards for the trade display saved us so much time coming up to the competition, and they received a lot of praise".

We love seeing recycled plastic being put to good use in student projects and supporting young people as they bring their STEM ideas to life!

Catch this movie night with a purpose!

FREE - The Plastic Country - Cardinia Cultural Centre Pakenham

Premiering in July 2026, follows Kal Glanznig, a former water polo athlete turned ocean advocate who grew up surfing the beaches of Cronulla.

Realising that Australia is now one of the world’s largest producers of plastic waste per person, Kal begins to question what this means not just for our environment, but for our bodies. What follows is a journey across the country, from remote coastlines to wildlife hospitals and Parliament House, uncovering how plastic pollution is infiltrating ecosystems, politics, and human health.

The Plastic Country is both a warning and a rallying cry - revealing solutions already underway and showing how everyone can drive the change needed to turn the tide on plastics for good.

Proudly supported by Cardinia Shire Council, representatives will be available before and after the screening to answer questions and facilitate discussion.

Plastic Free July doesn’t mean removing plastic from our lives completely. It means choosing recycled plastic over new plastic and avoiding single use. It is about small steps by everyone to approach plastic differently and it is about keeping valuable materials in circulation for as long as possible.

Over the next few weeks, we’re showcasing products made from 100% recycled plastic right here through Rethink Recycling.

First up, and probably the most fun, is our recycled plastic slinkies!

These colourful classroom favourites are sometimes gifted to lucky schools after our incursions, proving recycled plastic can be just as good, if not better than new!

For years you’ve been collecting lids, dropping them off and helping us keep thousands of kilograms of plastic out of landfill. 💚

Thank you. We genuinely couldn’t have done it without you.

But we’ve reached a point where we need to be honest.

We’re now receiving far more lids than we can sustainably process. Every lid needs to be sorted, cleaned, shredded and remanufactured using specialised equipment, electricity and hundreds of volunteer hours.

The missing piece is this…
A circular economy doesn’t end with collecting plastic. It only works when people choose to buy products made from that recycled plastic.

Without demand for recycled products, we’re simply creating a growing stockpile of recycled material with nowhere to go.

To help keep the program running, we’re introducing a qualifying purchase for all lid drop-offs.

• 0–20 kg of lids – $20
• 20–50 kg – $30
• Over 50 kg – $50

Every purchase directly supports the cost of recycling your lids and helps ensure they become something useful instead of waste.

This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the only way we can continue offering this service.

If we can’t close the loop, we’ll eventually have to stop accepting lids altogether.

To find out what your local council will and won't accept in your recycling bin (or green waste) and options for different materials such as textiles and e-waste, check your local waste and recycling guide online.

Common materials that vary across councils are greasy paper or cardboard and Tetra Paks. Can your council recycle these?

Something special is popping up at the Gardens these school holidays… and it’s got a very big nose!

Big Bandicoot Backyard is coming to Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne from 10–12 April, celebrating the gardens 20th birthday and one of our most fascinating native neighbours – the Southern Brown Bandicoot.

Rethink Recycling will be there with a hands-on activity for kids, where they can make their own Southern Bandicoot key chain mould using recycled plastic lids and see how everyday plastics can be transformed into something new.

The event also features a giant bandicoot sculpture, performances, creative activities and plenty of chances to learn about how we can protect wildlife living in our urban spaces.

Best of all – it’s free and perfect for curious kids and families.
