This study confirms what many of us who work with horses have long observed: horses can actually smell human fear and emotions through scent. Yet, what I find facinating in my work is observing differences. Just like humans, each horse responds differently. Some may withdraw from fear scents, while others lean into curiosity about these emotions. This research deepens my understanding that "fake it till you make it" simply isn't an option with horses. In fact, it can create more confusion for these incredibly sensitive beings. When we approach with authentic awareness of how our emotional states affect them, we open space for genuine connection and compassionate curiosity. It invites us to question: How can we respond to both our emotions and theirs with greater honesty and compassion?

Herd Reunited ✨

A beautiful moment captured as the herd came back together. 🐴💞 Watching them greet each other reminded me how important it is for horses to have more than just food, water, and shelter.
For the past weeks Buji had to be stabled due to injury. That meant she was separated from her herd mates. Even though I was with her often offering care, connection, and comfort I was not enough to settle her nervous system fully. Horses are deeply social animals, and being with their herd is vital for their wellbeing.
We often talk about the essentials of care, but true horse welfare goes beyond the basics it includes companionship, safety in numbers, and the regulation that comes from living as part of a herd.
Seeing them reunited today was a reminder of the healing power of connection for horses, and for us too. 🌿💚
