🦜 More than 150 bird species at McMinns Lagoon Reserve! 🐦🌿

Our regular volunteers Allan and Des had an interesting encounter at the Reserve recently when they stopped to chat with a lady who was busy birdwatching and recording her sightings for eBird.

In just an hour and a half, she had recorded more than 45 different bird species!

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised — more than 150 bird species have been recorded at McMinns Lagoon, making the Reserve a wonderful place for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

McMinns Lagoon also has its own eBird Hotspot, where birdwatchers can record their sightings and contribute to an ongoing record of the birdlife found at the Reserve.

💙 Have you ever wondered what the Blue Tree at McMinns Lagoon is all about?

It’s part of the Blue Tree Project, a mental health initiative that began in regional Western Australia and has since grown into a global movement.

Blue Trees are designed to be conversation starters and visual reminders to check in with ourselves and the people around us, helping to break down the stigma around mental health and remind people they’re not alone.

Sometimes a simple question like “Why is that tree blue?” can start a conversation that really matters.

So next time you see one of the Blue Trees, take it as a little reminder to check in with a mate, family member, or someone you haven’t heard from in a while. 💙

🌿 LILLY LANE ACCESS PROJECT – STAGE ONE COMPLETE 🌿

A strong start to an important access improvement at McMinns Lagoon Reserve!

The McMinns Lagoon Reserve Association extends a sincere thank you to Danny Skewes and Aldebaran Contracting for their generous donation of large boulders to help secure the Lilly Lane access point.

🪨 Stage One – Supply & Delivery

Stage One is complete, with approximately 15–17 large boulders delivered to McMinns Lagoon Reserve by Aldebaran Contracting.

As shown in the photos, the delivery included substantial rocks arriving on site 🚛🪨

Aldebaran Contracting generously provided the boulders, transport, and delivery, making a significant contribution to MLRA and the wider community.

🚜 Stage Two – Placement

Stage Two will take place over the coming weeks, with the boulders carefully positioned along the Lilly Lane access area.

This will help prevent unauthorised access by vehicles, motorbikes, and ATVs, while maintaining safe access for emergency and authorised vehicles, pedestrians, and prams.

The result will be a practical, long-term solution that helps protect the Reserve and its environment.

🪧 Stage Three – Signage (Project Completion)

Stage Three will complete the project, with new signage installed at Lilly Lane & other access points.

The signage will clearly outline access rules, support the purpose of the boulder barrier, and help prevent unauthorised entry and confusion.

Once installed, this will mark the completion of the Lilly Lane access improvement project.

NT Fisheries released approximately 50 tagged barramundi into McMinns Lagoon, Wednesday 29th July 2026… so come on down for a fish 🎣 …but please remember, it’s a Nature Reserve so it’s catch & release only!
