Southern Senior Citizens' Club Inc. McLaren Vale

Southern Senior Citizens' Club Inc. McLaren Vale Fun and Friendship for the over 55’s. All welcome. It was moved to the McLaren Vale Hall initially because the Willunga premises was being renovated.

The Club was founded in 1972 by Margo Burgess with help from the Willunga CWA and others and initial meetings were held in Willunga. However, in 1978 members agreed that McLaren Vale Institute Hall was the most suitable venue and meetings have been held here ever since. The purpose for its formation was to encourage older people in the Community to come out of their houses to socialise and to take

part in activities to assist their health and wellbeing. In 1994 our current Club room (an extension to the McLaren Vale Institute complex) was opened and has been managed by the Club under lease from the Council. It is a member of the Associated Senior Clubs of SA which "aims to encourage interaction and the holding of joint activities between its member clubs which provide seniors-related social and recreational activities. The Association has 40 metropolitan and country member clubs"
It provides the following "Services...
Liaison between member clubs
Insurance cover - reduced fees for a range of insurance options for member clubs." Two of our members currently represent our Club on the Association Committee. Currently our Club's annual membership subscription is $30, with the weekly session fees being $3 for a half day and $5 for a full day.

Some of our club members enjoyed a lovely day last Thursday visiting the Kondoparinga Homestead at Ashbourne. A huge thank you to Sandra and her fantastic team for hosting us and for the sharing their wonderful home and experiences. Thank you Samantha for the lovely practical display of costume and side saddle riding on such a gorgeous horse. We so loved the little ponies who have been rescued and now live in a home with so much love and care. Here are some pics of our outing (thanks to John, Sue, June and Iris for sharing some photos).

Last week a group of us enjoyed a lovely outing to the Elephant’s Rest at Callington for a delicious morning tea prepared by the hosts which included an extremely interesting talk on their travels to and from Africa etc, and a walk through the “African Garden”. We then went on to have lunch in the Murray Bridge Community Club before a short visit to the lovely Serenity Nursery prior to heading home.

A big thank you to all our members who have supported our Jeans for Genes Charity Day this year. This culminated in a fun competition day at the club last Monday where the “Blue Team” played against the “Green Team”.
