We proudly celebrate 17 years of impact, connection, and service from SI Maylands Peninsula. Since its charter, the club has played a meaningful role in strengthening communities, advancing important causes, and improving the lives of women and girls.

This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the many projects, partnerships, and milestones achieved over the years — each one made possible by the dedication, generosity, and shared purpose of its members. From past pioneers to today’s changemakers, every contribution has helped shape the strong and vibrant club we celebrate now.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all past and present members whose commitment, leadership, and passion continue to inspire. Your collective efforts have created a lasting legacy and ensured that the Soroptimist spirit remains strong within SI Maylands Peninsula.

Tomorrow, June 5th is World Environment Day 2026: A Global Call for Climate Action. The theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future.”

First held in 1973, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development and wildlife crime.

Soroptimist goes by the UN sustainable goals to help women across the world.

What a lovely general meeting we had last night! We welcomed a potential member and confirmed that another new member will be inducted into our club soon. Our special guest, Julie, a member of SI South Perth, told us about her experiences at the recent Soroptimist International South East Asia Pacific Conference of Clubs 2026 in Kota Kinabalu. It sounded like a colourful, friendly, and inspiring event. We enjoyed a lovely supper, including some bush tucker pastes and relishes, in recognition of National Reconciliation Week. The pièce de résistance, however, was a stunning and delicious birthday cake 🎂. Our club turns seventeen on June 6th! As one member reflected, she was in her forties when she joined, and she's now approaching pension age! 👵🏻 What a brilliant testimony to our club and Soroptimists all over the world. ❤️

The Action for Happiness organisation is a UK based movement of people taking action to create a happier and kinder world, together. 😊 The Action for Happiness calendar is published each month. Last month was ‘Meaningful May’, and our club certainly followed that ethos. We either hosted or participated in two National Volunteer Week events, a National Reconciliation Week breakfast, a heat of “The Floor is Yours” public speaking competition, the Lift the Lid Walk and Expo for Mental Health, and two market stalls! We look forward to a Joyful June … but perhaps a little less hectic!

The Soroptimist International Convention for next year is from 29 September to 01 October 2027. Soroptimists from across the world will gather at the Prague Congress Centre, Prague, for three days of shared learning, connection and action.

Soroptimist International Maylands Peninsula hosted a heat of “The Floor is Yours” at North Metro TAFE on Tuesday evening. “The Floor is Yours” is a public speaking competition for tertiary-enrolled women focused on the empowerment and enablement of women and girls.

There was a terrific audience of around thirty people, including friends and family of participants, and supporters from Soroptimist International South Perth. Both Directors from North & South Metropolitan TAFE attended as well as a few library staff.

Nine amazing young women spoke with passion and conviction about issues of concern to them and women in general. The winner was Sapna Timorian, who spoke to the 2026 IWD campaign theme: Give to Gain with her talk titled "From silence to strength". The judges also highly commended Niamh Fingleton whose topic was Violence Against Women in the Digital Age.

The judges had a difficult task, and our sincere thanks go to Georgina Ker, Manager Working Women’s Centre WA; Rania Soliman, Director English and Auslan; North Metro TAFE, and our own Carole Baetge.

We were also delighted to welcome back 2025 contestants Deying Pu and Dalin Nakhla, who kindly spoke for a few minutes about their experience last year and how much they valued their participation.

The Grand Final will be Saturday, 20 June 2026, 2.00pm @ venue TBA. Watch this space!

Yesterday, I attended a National Reconciliation Week Breakfast Watch Party with a small, but dedicated and enthusiastic group at the One World Centre. The breakfast was streamed live from Optus Stadium with a number of speakers, videos, and interviews. The highlight was the impassioned Keynote Address by Whadjuk Noongar journalist and newsreader Narelda Jacobs. Narelda's speech begins at the 59-minute mark. You will need to create an SBS on Demand account (it's free) or sign in to your existing account. It's also worth watching the Reconciliation Choir performing Midnight Oil's 'Beds are Burning' at the 1 hour 36 minute mark. Members of the public can join this choir every year (if you're quick enough). I might even consider it next year! Let me know if you'd like to join me. 🎶
