We’re excited to share a new article featuring our Artistic Director, Michelle St Anne, in conversation with Tamara Winikoff. As Michelle steps down from her role as Chair of the Inner West Creative Network to focus on her artistic practice and our growing company, The Living Room Theatre is also celebrating a major milestone: securing our first-ever permanent home at 21 Shepherd Street, Marrickville.

For 25 years, we created work in borrowed and forgotten spaces across the city. Now, we finally have a place to call home — a space for rehearsal, risk-taking, and artistic curiosity. 21 Shepherd St isn’t a traditional black box; it’s a place of trust, intimacy, and transformation. We can’t wait to share this next chapter with you.

In this conversation with arts advocate Tamara Winikoff, The Living Room Theatre’s Artistic Director Michelle St Anne reflects on a year of profound transition — for both herself and the organisation she founded. As she steps down from her role as Chair of the Inner West Creative Network to deep...

What a sheer delight to welcome Monica Brooks as the first musician to play Olive in our new home!

Her sounds floated across the room, revealing more than just the piano… they revealed worlds.

Olive is our Kawai Pianos Australia GX3, now a permanent companion in our space.

If you’re a pianist who loves crafting unusual, immersive worlds, we’d love to hear from you!...

The launch of our new home 21 Shepherd, Marrickville was overflowing— with people, with joy, and with good wishes ( including a message from the Prime Minister, no less!).

This space has been years in the making — a home for ideas, mischief and conversations that need to be had.

Thank you to everyone who has walked beside us, believed in us, and celebrated this new beginning.

Here’s to making and imagining together — in our residence.

As theatre people we know the angst of packing up after a day only to have to reset the next day.

Introducing 21 Shepherd, Marrickville.

What a studio is to a painter, our home will be a studio for performance practice.

Just as a painter’s brushes, paints, and canvases remain in place, ready for the next stroke, the next day, this space will provide the continuity and stability necessary for experimentation, courage and safety.

The artistic process won’t be packed away at the end of the day; but the smock remains on the hook, the work suspended in motion, shifting and evolving with momentum until it is complete.

Be part of our story.

On 23 October, join us in celebrating AusArt Day and help us build this home for independent artists. We are seeking to raise $20K to support this box breaking initiative.

Your support means the world to independents whose impact moves far beyond economic terms.

We have joined a national celebration of giving — AusArt Day 2025!

AusArt Day is a day to support the artists who imagine, question, and rebuild the world.

For 25 years, The Living Room Theatre has made work in borrowed spaces. Now, we’re building our first permanent home — a home for independence.

Help us turn 21 Shepherd Street, Marrickville, into a space where art can breathe, evolve, and flourish.

We’re proud to be part of AusArt Day 2025 — the National Day of Giving to the Arts.

On this day, artists and organisations across Australia come together to celebrate the transformative power of the arts — and to invite you to help keep that power alive.

For The Living Room Theatre, this year is especially meaningful.
After 25 years of working in borrowed, temporary, and abandoned spaces, we are finally building a permanent home at 21 Shepherd Street, Marrickville.

Through our Building Space campaign, we’re raising $20,000 to activate this space — to make it a living home for courageous, performative research.

What a studio is to a painter, 21 Shepherd will be to our practice:
a place where work doesn’t get packed away,
but keeps moving, shifting, and gathering momentum.

Join us this AusArt Day — and help us build a space where art can breathe.
