Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL Inc.

Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL Inc. 14 Sub Branches and 1 Chapter on the Sunshine Coast providing Pension Advocacy and Welfare assistance to Veterans and their Families.

The RSL evolved as a direct result of the camaraderie, concern and mateship shown by the "Diggers" for the welfare of their mates during and after World War 1. In 1915 at least four of the Australian States (Qld, NSW, Vic and SA) formed Returned Soldiers Associations as a gathering place for returned men. In 1916, there were no welfare services or repatriation facilities such as we know today, so

the RSL was formed to provide for the sick, wounded and needy among those who served and their dependants. The four States met in an endeavour to reach agreement regarding the formation of an Australia wide Returned Soldiers Association. Collectively, they formed the Returned Sailors & Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). The organisation underwent several name changes and is today known as the Returned & Services League of Australia. Dedicated to sustaining the reputable mateship and camaraderie linked to the Iconic RSL brand, the RSL remains as relevant today as in 1916. Today, the RSL is the largest ex-service organisation in Australia with a national membership of around 200,000. Membership is the lifeblood of the League but remember - joining an RSL Club is NOT THE SAME as joining an RSL Sub Branch. In fact, in most cases in Queensland, RSL Clubs operate independently of RSL Sub Branches. The State Headquarters of the RSL (Queensland Branch) is located at 283 St Pauls Terrace, Fortitude Valley in Brisbane. The company oversees the administration of 10 Regional District Offices, and over 250 Sub Branches representing nearly 40,000 members in Queensland.

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR VETERANS & FAMILIES ⚠️

Big changes are coming to how DVA compensation claims work — and every veteran needs to know about this before 1 July 2026.

📋 WHAT'S CHANGING?
From 1 July 2026, the three laws that cover veterans' compensation (VEA, DRCA and MRCA) are being simplified into ONE — an improved Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (MRCA). This is the biggest change to veterans' legislation in decades.

🗓️ WHICH LAW CURRENTLY COVERS YOU?
• Served AFTER 1 July 2004 → MRCA
• Served BEFORE 1 July 2004 → VEA and/or DRCA
• Service that spans both → could be all three

✅ WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• Payments you're already receiving will NOT be cut — they continue and are indexed as normal
• Claims already lodged but not yet decided will be processed under the new system
• Veterans on DRCA incapacity payments will automatically move to the more generous MRCA payments — no action needed
• Whether to lodge a claim before or after 1 July depends on YOUR individual circumstances — there's no one-size-fits-all answer

💡 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
If you have an unresolved claim, are thinking about lodging, or aren't sure how this affects you — speak to a veterans' advocate BEFORE 30 June 2026.

This year marks the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France.
D-Day marked the beginning of the Allied liberation of Europe from N**i occupation during World War II. On 6 June 1944, the largest armada of ships ever assembled, and more than 10,000 supporting aircraft, stormed the beaches of Normandy.
Approximately 3,000 Australians participated in the D-Day landings. Royal Australian Air Force squadrons provided cover by bombing German military units, while Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy personnel took part in the land and sea invasion. More than 4,000 lives were lost on D-Day.

Lest we forget.
