Margaret River & Districts Historical Society

Margaret River & Districts Historical Society Welcome to the MRDHS page! Feel free to post comments or questions here. We offer school excursions and any adult tours. Please email below for more details.

We are a non profit organisation, but our local Shire of Augusta Margaret River provide funds yearly to the Society to help us maintain our buildings and the grounds. The Margaret River & Districts Historical Society grew out of the Margaret River History Group which was formed to amass the information necessary for the publication of the book of the history of our shire, “The Light of Leeuwin”.

The Historical Society was inaugurated in 1999 and up until now this small but enthusiastic Society has concentrated on photographic, artefacts and documentary collection. The Margaret River & Districts Historical Society meets monthly, on the fourth Thursday of each month, at The Old Bramley School building, The Old Settlement, 69 Bussell Highway, Margaret River, at 1.30pm. This is also where we have our displays and information. New members and visitors are most welcome. Membership subscription is $30 per annum. Volunteers are welcome to help when the buildings are open to the public.

Well done Lloyd. Well deserved for all of your community work.

🎉 Congratulations to Lloyd Shepherdson on being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding service to our community.

In addition to running some of Margaret River’s best-known businesses - Shepherdson Transport, Mitre 10, and Lloyds of Margaret River - Lloyd has served as Shire President (1991–1995), Rotary President, Apex leader, and supported countless community projects.

He follows in the footsteps of both his mother, Dorothy, and his late wife, Anne, in receiving this honour.

👏 On behalf of everyone in our community, thank you Lloyd. You’ve made our Shire a better place to live.

National Volunteer Week has been busy for our volunteers over two days with 80 wonderful children from Dunsborough Primary School. But we did it!
Here are some older photos of past and present volunteers who have all volunteered their time to the Historical Society over several years. And a couple of photos of future volunteers! Ha ha.
If anyone is interested in volunteering, please get in touch with us. We would love to have you on board.

We hope every one has a wonderful Australia Day. And no matter if you celebrate the day or not it’s a time to reflect on how beautiful our country is. So just enjoy the day with friends, family or don’t it’s your choice.
(These aren’t my photos, except the group photo of my wonderful girlfriends enjoying a swim at Gnarabup)
