The High Country Flyathlon is in for a course change this year. The Howqua river course is going to bring some new tactics, some fly fishing history and maybe even some bigger fish. All this along with everything else you’ve come to expect from the event, good food and beer, new friends and prizes.
Tactics: Flyathletes have an option of two different routes which they can mix and match for the 14km return run. The Low track has 12 river crossings so wet feet will be unavoidable. The High track is a couple hundred metres shorter but has a little bit more elevation, the only chance for river access is the first and last KM’s, this could be a faster route without slowing for the crossings and keeping your feet dry, the views are also worth something to.
History: the halfway point where Flyathletes will have refreshments before turning around is Ritchies Hut. An old fishing hut built by Fred Fry and only accessible on foot.
You can download this map on the website and then get your registration sorted while you’re at it. Thanks for the map.
However due to mandatory river crossings. If the water levels are too high at the end of November then we will have to make the decision to shift the venue back to the Delatite river course.
