The Moreton Bay Marine Park research team have been busy tagging Grey Nurse Sharks.
This is to collect vital data to protect the species, track migration routes, identify key habits and breeding grounds.

For the Moreton Bay Marine Park research team, tagging a grey nurse shark is all in a day’s work 🤠

Despite their tough appearance, grey nurse sharks are nicknamed the “Labradors of the sea” – calm, curious, and generally harmless to humans. Still, tagging them requires years of training and meticulous planning to keep both the sharks and scientists safe.

These gentle giants need our help. With slow breeding rates and ongoing fishing pressures, their populations remain vulnerable. Yet they’re crucial to healthy oceans, helping to balance marine ecosystems by feeding on fish, squid, rays, smaller sharks and crustaceans 🦈☯️

Through tagging, researchers can:
✔ Track migration routes
✔ Identify key habitats and breeding grounds
✔ Collect vital data to protect the species

World Wetlands Day is the perfect moment to deepen our understanding of what needs to be done—and what we can do now.

Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s.
Over 30% have been completely lost since the 1970s.
Today, the Earth is losing wetlands three times faster than forests.

Wetlands are not wastelands. They are life-support systems—protecting biodiversity, storing carbon, filtering water, and supporting communities.

Protecting wetlands means protecting our future. 🌍💧
