Who knew we had so many Master Chefs in our Cub Section? 🧑‍🍳👩‍🍳

This week our Cubs continued their preparation for our upcoming district camp by practicing their cooking skills.

Our Assistant Patrol Leaders led their patrols in making Haystacks (nachos with salad) using our camping stoves, and even did the washing up afterwards!

For some it was their first time cooking, let alone using a gas cooker. This activity allowed our Cubs to practice so many different skills: following instructions, patience, communication, and teamwork. Not to mention hygiene and nutrition. At our reflection there was a lot of talk about what foods we would eat at camp and why… and what foods we wouldn’t be eating and why… 🍭😅

Tents up! ⛺ This week our Cubs got hands-on learning to pitch the section's brand new tents - and it was our Assistant Patrol Leaders who stepped up to lead the way, guiding their patrols through every peg and pole.

It's all part of the countdown to Mission: Adventure, the Fort Lytton District Cub Camp. 🎒

Because here's the thing - Cubs don't just turn up at camp and have fun (though there's plenty of that too!). In the weeks beforehand, they're the ones doing the work: planning and budgeting the meals, sorting out who's cooking and who's cleaning, checking the equipment and packing the trailer.

For some of our Cubs, camp will be their very first time sleeping in a tent and spending a night away from home. That's a big deal and all this preparation helps them arrive feeling ready and confident.

Along the way they're practicing the things that really matter: leadership, teamwork, communication and a fair bit of negotiation. 💪

We can't wait to see them put it all into action at camp!

Ever seen a kid's face light up the first time they breathe underwater through a snorkel? 🤿

This week our Cubs did exactly that at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, fitting their masks, learning to clear a foggy lens, racing snorkel relays, and diving through hoops. It ended, as all the best days do, in an epic pool noodle battle. 🌊

And this is just the beginning. It's the first of many activities that will build their skills step by step, working towards confidently and safely snorkelling in open water later in their Scouting journey.

This is what being a Sea Scout is all about. As one of only a handful of Sea Scout groups in the country, we get our young people into the water and building real confidence - not just this week, but all year round.

What looks like fun is often where the best learning happens.

This week at Bayside Sea Scouts, our Cubs took on a pioneering challenge, learning how to tie a clove hitch and square lashing before putting those skills into practice by building A-frame chariots in their patrols. 🪢🌿

As they worked together, the Cubs discovered that success wasn't just about tying a knot - it was about communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and persistence. After testing their chariots, each patrol refined their lashings and made improvements before lining up for some friendly races.

Throughout the evening, we also talked about where these skills are used beyond Scouting, from camping and outdoor adventures to construction, emergency response, and engineering. Helping young people understand the why behind what they're learning is just as important as teaching the skill itself.

Seeing our Cubs grow in confidence as they worked together, solved problems, and celebrated each other's successes was a wonderful reminder of what Scouting is all about.
