Green Spaces Counter the Blues

Green Spaces Counter the Blues Using community expertise to create green spaces vital for individual and community well-being A 2024 project presented by Southern Forests Community Landcare.

In recognition of the value that public and private green spaces bring to community wellbeing, Green Spaces Counter the Blues will empower residents in Manjimup, Pemberton and Northcliffe to create green spaces that provide food, relaxation, recreation and habitat. This will be achieved through a series of workshops and activities designed to strengthen social connectivity while building a more wa

terwise community. Activities will deliver grassroots education and support in developing soils and gardens that are resilient to drought stress and recover more rapidly post-crisis. Based on a view that understanding must precede implementation, this project will harness existing community expertise, creating networks of knowledge sharing and capacity building to create green spaces that are more suited to a drying climate.

Join us this Friday night at 7.30pm at the Clem Collins Centre in the Northcliffe Rec Ground for a night of stargazing!

Local astronomy enthusiast Joanna Davis is part way through a Masters in Astronomy and taught Science and Upper School Physics for several years in Australia and Britain. Joanne also recently completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence, a fancy title for studying law, but on this occasion, she will be sharing another of my great passions – the laws of the universe. Joanne will be talking about the origins of the cosmos, how the stars are formed and a bit on the history of astronomy. She'll guide you through our current knowledge of the solar system and how to find your way around the night sky.

If the sky’s clear, we can look at the planets, constellations and other fascinating objects with the naked eye and binoculars and telescopes, which you may feel free to bring if you have them. For the astrophotography enthusiasts, bring your phone, camera and tripod. Please bring torches for moving around the oval in the dark.

Look forward to “looking up” with you.

Meet at the Clem Collins Centre, Northcliffe Recreation Ground, George Gardner Drive at 7.30pm. For more information or to RSVP, contact Wendy from Southern Forests Community Landcare and Southern Forests Photography Club via text 0434 811 474 or [email protected]

This diagram compares the natural vegetation succession process with the Miyawaki Mini-Forest method. In natural succession, the ecosystem evolves over centuries, starting with annual plants and progressing through stages of perennial herbs, shrubs, pioneer trees, and eventually reaching a climax forest over 100–200 years. In contrast, the Miyawaki method accelerates this process by densely planting local climax species seedlings. Within just a few years, the forest canopy quickly establishes itself, shading out weeds, and within 15-40 years, a multi-layered, quasi-natural climax forest develops, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem in a much shorter timeframe. The Miyawaki method provides a rapid and efficient way to restore biodiversity and promote forest growth.

Get curious. 🔎

Some of the most important skills that young people can have is a curiosity and appreciation for nature. Getting them involved in citizen science from a young age helps them nurture those skills.

This (August 9-17), we're running CSIRO Wild Watch, our very first national science experiment made for young explorers.

CSIRO Wild Watch calls curious minds - young and young-at-heart - to head outdoors, observe local flora and fauna, and contribute valuable biodiversity data for Australian research.
