The Djelk Rangers and Bawinanga Homelands Aboriginal Corporation extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Desmond Nangururr.

Desmond was a legend to many people and a highly respected member of the Djelk Ranger family. His dedication, knowledge and commitment to caring for Country left a lasting impact on everyone who worked alongside him. Desmond's work, leadership and passion will continue to inspire future Rangers, and his legacy will be preserved and honoured through the ongoing work of caring for Country.

At this sad time, our thoughts are with Desmond's family and all those mourning his loss. We thank him for everything he gave to his people, his community and the Ranger program.

Rest in Peace, Nawu Nawu. Your legacy will live on forever.

When Djelk Rangers Talk Crocs, It Pays to Listen

A 3 metre saltwater crocodile was recently safely captured at the Maningrida barge landing area, reminding us all that crocs are active in our waterways. Following the capture, Djelk rangers visited the school to give students a crocodile awareness talk, sharing important messages about how to stay safe. The big reminder was simple: no swimming at the barge landing — not today, not tomorrow, and not even “just for a quick dip.” Crocodiles are sneaky, fast, and very good at hide and seek, so it’s best not to give them a chance.

Community safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please take the time to read and follow the crocodile safety signs when visiting the barge landing or nearby areas – the signs are there for a good reason (see pics). Parents and carers are strongly encouraged to talk with their children and family members about crocodile safety when out on country or near water. By sharing this knowledge and staying alert, we can look after one another and help keep our community safe.

Shout out to all the deadly women in our Network for International Women's Day yesterday! ✨

ICIN's recent Savanna Fire Forum opened with leading female voices in the session:

'Indigenous Women Stepping Up: Empowering the Next Generation' facilitated by ICIN Co-Chair Cissy Gore-Birch💛

In this session, held in the auditorium in front of 500 people, we first heard from Bawinanga Rangers on the leading role of women in their carbon project.

Joyce Bohme, the Women Ranger Supervisor, explained that traditionally, fire work was done by men, with women gathering bushfood.

Nowadays, women rangers are involved in fire work, including early dry season burning, and also leading with all things mapping, planning and logistics💥

CEO of Olkola Aboriginal Corporation Cape York, Debbie Ross, presented on the carbon project she has been leading that's been running for over ten years.

She explained it has taken a few years to have people show respect for a woman Traditional Owner leader in a CEO role, stating:

"For a long time, walking into a room, there was an assumption that you don’t know anything."

Debbie talked about how things have changed since women stepped into fire management roles within their carbon projects explaining that:

🫂More families are getting involved as the women work on country
🗣Women rangers are developing a variety of skills through training and
🫡The longer men and women work together in these ranger roles the easier it gets.

How exciting! Photos of Djelk Rangers collecting croc eggs will be used in an examination paper for Year 12 students the Geography Teachers Association of NSW and ACT are producing!

It is important that students in other parts of Australia learn about the involvement of Traditional Owners and Rangers in research activities and the supply chain for the global crocodile skin market, with a positive effect on both the local community and the commercial farms supplied.
