Manilla Sub-Branch will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan at the Manilla Memorial Hall with service starting at 11am.
All invited to attend

Tomorrow, 18 August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.

The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th Century, with almost 60,000 Australians serving during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. About 3,000 Australians were wounded during the war, and 524 died during their service in Vietnam or as a result of that service.

Tomorrow, we gather to say thank you.

Nancy Wake ran away from her family's Sydney home at just sixteen years old. By the time the Gestapo were finished chasing her, she was one of the most decorated women of the entire Second World War.

Raised in Australia after being born in New Zealand, Wake became a journalist and was working in Europe when she witnessed N**i gangs beating Jewish people in the streets of Vienna. She promised herself she would fight back if she ever got the chance. When France fell in 1940, she used her French husband's fortune to help finance a Resistance network, working first as a courier and smuggler across occupied territory.

The Germans never learned her real identity. They only knew her as an elusive, impossible to catch operative they nicknamed the White Mouse, and put a five million franc bounty on her head. She trained with British special forces in London and parachuted back into occupied France in 1944 to help arm and lead thousands of resistance fighters.

It was only after France was liberated that Wake learned what her survival had actually cost. Her husband, Henri, had been tortured and killed by the Gestapo for refusing to give her up.

She died in London in 2011, aged 98, one of the most highly decorated Allied servicewomen of the entire war.

Lest we Forget

It is with a very heavy heart that I pass onto you the very sad news that Legatee Bill Crowley passed away on Saturday 8th August following a valiant battle with cancer.

Legatee Bill was accepted into Tamworth Legacy on 1st February, 1973 and was formally inducted into Tamworth Legacy on 9th March, 1974.

Bill was a Vietnam Veteran and was attached firstly to the 1st Australian Reinforcement Unit, in Vietnam in 1970, he then served briefly with 6th Battalion RAR before completing his tour with the 7th Battalion RAR and returned to Australia in 1971.

Bill was very quickly snapped up by our Barraba Group and after the ‘old guard’ slowly stepped down, he became Chairman of the Group and had remained in that position faithfully supporting our widows and Legatees until he became too sick.

Bill was a dedicated Legatee and the nicest man you could ever wish to meet and always had many a tale to tell. He was one of lifes true gentleman.

Our deepest condolences to his wife Judy and his family and to the Barraba Legatees and widows on the passing of Bill.

Legacy will keep it’s promise Bill and will take Judy into our care.
