What a weekend for our community!

As severe weather impacted the Peel Region and beyond, emergency service volunteers worked tirelessly to respond to requests for assistance and support those affected.

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers from Mandurah State Emergency Service - SES who spent countless hours assisting the community, mostly in challenging conditions!

We are especially proud of the many former Mandurah Emergency Service Cadets who were among the SES crews responding to incidents across the weekend. Seeing past cadets step into operational roles and serve their communities during times of need is a powerful reminder of the value of the Cadet Program and the future leaders it helps develop.

While response crews were out attending jobs, our current cadets were hard at work behind the scenes supporting operations. Throughout the weekend, cadets assisted with filling sandbags for community members, resetting rescue trailers, sorting and replenishing equipment, and helping ensure response teams could get back out the door as quickly as possible.

Emergency response is always a team effort, and this weekend demonstrated that perfectly. From experienced volunteers on the road, to former cadets now serving as responders, to current cadets supporting operations from base, every contribution made a difference.

We couldn’t be prouder of our cadets—past and present—and the role they continue to play in supporting our community.

What an incredible weekend of learning, teamwork and achievement for our cadets and instructors!

We were proud to have 10 of our cadets and instructors attend a Skills Development Weekend hosted by DFES.

Across the weekend, participants completed nationally recognised training in:

✅ Provide First Aid
✅ Bronze Medallion
✅ Aquatic Trainer Qualification

Congratulations to the 14 cadets and instructors who successfully achieved their Bronze Medallion, and to the 3 instructors who are now qualified Aquatic Trainers — allowing them to assess cadets within their own units in the future.

One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing everyone encourage and support each other through the timed swim challenges and practical rescue scenarios. There were plenty of smiles, laughs and team spirit while developing important rescue, water safety and survival skills 💪🌊

We were proud to welcome participants from:

📍 Jurien Bay ESCC
📍 Quinns Rocks YES
📍 Northam YES
📍 Tranby College ESCC
📍 John Tonkin College ESCC
📍 Emmanuel Christian Community School ESCC
📍 Two Rocks YES

A huge thank you to Cathie from Royal Life Saving Society WA for volunteering her Sunday to deliver the Bronze training and share her knowledge and experience with our young people and volunteers, and to Justin from Time Critical CPR & First Aid Training for delivering the First aid training on Saturday.

Weekends like this are a fantastic example of cadets building confidence, leadership and real-world emergency service skills while creating friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who took part 👏

Check out this great event being hosted by our friends at Mandurah State Emergency Service - SES!

A great way to be prepared for the next few months :)

Come and meet our dedicated SES volunteers to hear how to be prepared before disaster may hit.
When a severe storm forms quickly there may not be much time to prepare yourself or your property. It’s important to create a personalised emergency plan before disaster strikes. You’ll have a better chance of reducing damage and injury if everyone knows what to do and your property is well maintained.

Meet Millie!

Millie graduated from our program as the Cadet Unit Leader last year and is now a volunteer with the State Emergency Service and Bush Fire Brigade. Millie shares some of her journey below.

"Being a cadet has shown me that anything is possible.

Through this journey, I’ve experienced things most 15–17 year olds never do—climbing mountains, swimming through gorges, visiting small country towns, meeting footy players, and competing in challenges I never thought I could take on. These are once-in-a-lifetime moments that have shaped who I am today.

The DFES Cadet Program has taught me a powerful lesson: if you put your mind to something, your body will follow—no matter how fast or slow the journey may be.

Over time, I progressed through the ranks from cadet to Cadet Unit Leader. Along the way, I found more than just skills—I found a community. The volunteers, the stories shared, the places explored, and the lifelong friendships I’ve made have made every moment worth it.

This program has built my mental strength and shown me that limits are often just something we place on ourselves.

My strength comes from my local community. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people who shared their knowledge, experiences, and support with me.

I’ve learned that with the right mindset, support, and determination—anything is possible."

Meet Tyler!

Tyler is a former Cadet Team Leader, graduating from our program last year and now serving as a volunteer with the State Emergency Service and Bush Fire Brigade. See what Tyler has to say about his journey below.

"I still remember joining cadets in November 2021, just before the summer holidays. At the time, I was shy, unsure, and honestly a little nervous. I joined to learn skills like first aid, casualty handling, and leadership—but I didn’t expect how much it would change me.

In those early days, I kept to myself. I didn’t speak up much or fully take part. But everything shifted when I attended a leadership camp in Broome. That experience pushed me out of my comfort zone. I faced challenges, proved to myself why I deserved to be there, and discovered the kind of leader I could become.

Through cadets, I’ve gained more than just practical skills. I’ve built confidence, learned teamwork, strengthened my communication, and discovered what real leadership looks like. To me now, strength isn’t just physical—it’s having the courage to try, to speak up, and to keep going even when things feel tough.

With the support of my family and my instructors in Mandurah, I’ve grown into someone who believes in themselves.

Today, I stay involved because I want to give back. I want to support younger cadets, just like others supported me. Seeing them grow in confidence and skills is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.

Cadets have shaped who I am today—more confident, more capable, and ready to take on new challenges. If you’re thinking about joining, my advice is simple: give it a go. You might just surprise yourself.

My strength comes from every challenge I’ve faced and overcome—and I’m proud to use what I’ve learned to support my community.

Meet Pippa!

Pippa is currently a Team Leader within our Cadet Unit and has shared part of her story below!

"When I first joined cadets, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I first saw my friend in the Anzac Day parade and that’s when I decided to try it out. I was scared initially about what it would be like but that fear left so fast! They were so welcoming towards me and the other new cadets. It was the best decision I have made and has taught me things that will be useful forever.
My experience has taught me that any moment is a teachable moment that betters me and others always. Each week I start counting down the days until training and on that day I’m always in a good mood because I know I will be surrounded by some of my favourite people. Cadets has given me so many new skills like self-confidence, leadership and communication.

Strength to me means being able to have something happen that you can not control and being able to accept, continue and move on with it. "

Meet Harmony!

Currently a volunteer with both the State Emergency Service and her local Bush Fire Brigade. Harmony completed her cadet pathway with us last year and it didn't take much time for her to become an active operational volunteer across both these services!

Check out what Harmony had to say:

"The cadet program helped me build and discover strength by pushing me beyond my comfort zone and teaching how to handle challenges. It showed me that resilience comes from not giving up, especially during tough moments and that mistakes are part of the process of improvement. My experiences as a cadet have made me believe in myself more and proved strength isn’t just physical - it’s about endurance, resilience and mindset."

WA Youth Week 2026

This week we’re celebrating WA Youth Week — recognising the energy, dedication, and achievements of young people across our community 💙

At Mandurah Emergency Services Cadets, our cadets are a great example of what young people can achieve when given the opportunity to learn, lead, and give back. Whether it’s attending weekly training, developing practical emergency service skills, supporting community events, or working together as a team, our cadets consistently step up and give their best.

Over the past year, we’ve seen our young people grow in confidence, build strong friendships, and demonstrate real leadership — both within the unit and out in the community. From drill and marching to hands-on activities and volunteering, every experience helps shape the future leaders of Mandurah.

WA Youth Week is a chance to recognise that impact. The commitment our cadets show today is already making a difference, and we’re incredibly proud of each and every one of them!

Over the next week we will be supporting the theme of 'Strength in our Stories' and sharing the journeys of some of our current and former cadets.

If you see one of our cadets this week, take a moment to acknowledge their hard work and dedication.

🚨 Bunnings Sausage Sizzle 🚨

Our friends at Mandurah State Emergency Service - SES are swapping out their safety gear for a trusty BBQ apron today to raise funds for the unit!

If you were considering a trip to Greenfields Bunnings today (which be honest - who isn’t?) grab a sizzle or two and support these local legends!

I also hear their mascot Sniffa the search dog is going to be in attendance around lunch time 🐶
