πŸ’œ World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 πŸ’œ

Peel Community Legal Services was proud to host our World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) event at the Greenfields Family & Community Centre.

Guests were warmly welcomed on arrival by Midnight Rose - Shevonne, whose beautiful singing created a wonderful atmosphere and set the tone for a meaningful and enjoyable morning.

It was wonderful to see so many community members attend, engage in meaningful conversations, and learn more about elder abuse and the ways we can work together to prevent it. We greatly appreciated the thoughtful questions, discussions, and interactions throughout the morning.

A special thank you to:
✨ Councillor Jenny Green for her opening remarks.
✨ Mayor Amber Kearns for taking the time to visit the event.
✨ Lorraine for delivering the Acknowledgement of Country.
✨ Our information stall holders – Allambee, Peel Senior Relationship Service (PSRS), and the City of Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre – for sharing valuable information and support services with attendees.

A huge thank you also goes to Carolina and the Mandurah Filipino Australian Multicultural Community Incorporated for their fantastic spring roll cooking demonstration, followed by vibrant cultural performances from their talented dancers and singer.

A very special thank you to Little Baker for generously donating WEAAD cupcakes for everyone to enjoy.🧁

A highlight of the morning was our "Changing Elder Abuse Piece by Piece" treasure hunt. Participants searched for puzzle pieces around the venue, with each piece prompting discussion about the domains of elder abuse. It was a fun and interactive way to encourage learning and conversation, while the completed puzzle provided a powerful visual representation of the importance of raising awareness and working together to prevent elder abuse. πŸ’œπŸ§©

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Department of Communities and Encompass Legal and Community Services (ELCS) for their support in making this important event possible.

Together, we continue to raise awareness, promote respect, and support older people in our community.

Today, Peel Community Legal Services attended the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) forum hosted by Peel Senior Relationship Service and the City of Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre.

The event brought together community members and service providers to raise awareness of elder abuse and promote the rights, safety, and wellbeing of older people.

We were pleased to have one of our lawyers participate in the panel discussion, discussing elder abuse, available support services, and the steps people can take if they or someone they know needs help.

PCLS also shared an information table with Allambee to raise awareness of the We Say No to Violence alliance and the collective work being done across the Peel region to prevent violence and support safer communities.

Thank you to the organisers for hosting this important event and to everyone who took the time to connect with us today.

Peel Community Legal Services would like to thank the Peel Multicultural Association for inviting us to celebrate Philippine Independence Day on Saturday.

It was a wonderful opportunity to promote the work that PCLS does within the community, share information about our services, and advertise our upcoming What's the Law? – Tenancy workshop, which will be held on Thursday 2 July.

We thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic performances, delicious traditional food, and vibrant cultural costumes. It was a beautiful celebration honouring Philippine Independence Day. πŸ’™

πŸ’œ World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 πŸ’œ

Today, we recognise World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a global day dedicated to raising awareness of elder abuse and promoting the rights, dignity and wellbeing of older people.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including:

🟣 Financial abuse
🟣 Psychological or emotional abuse
🟣 Physical abuse
🟣 Sexual abuse
🟣 Social abuse and isolation
🟣 Neglect

Sadly, elder abuse often occurs behind closed doors and can affect older people from all walks of life. By raising awareness, having conversations, and knowing where to seek help, we can all play a role in protecting and supporting older members of our community.

At Peel Community Legal Services, we are committed to supporting older people through legal assistance, advocacy, education and community awareness initiatives.

To continue the conversation, we invite community members to join us on Thursday, 18 June for our free World Elder Abuse Awareness Day community event, "Changing Elder Abuse, Piece by Piece."

The event will provide an opportunity to:
