A serious new threat to Australia’s wildlife has arrived.

The first confirmed detection of the H5 avian influenza virus on mainland Australia has been announced, following a positive test in a Brown Skua found in southwest Western Australia.

For those of us who work with wildlife every day, this news is deeply concerning.

Birds are already facing enormous pressures from habitat loss, climate change, vehicle strike, predation and human impacts. The arrival of H5 avian influenza has the potential to place even greater pressure on our vulnerable native bird populations.

At Wildlife Animals Australia, we will be closely following advice from wildlife authorities and remaining vigilant for any signs of illness in birds. Early reporting and responsible action will be vital in protecting our wildlife.

What can the public do?
• Do not handle sick or dead birds with bare hands
• Keep pets away from sick or deceased wildlife
• Report unusual numbers of sick or dead birds to the appropriate authorities
• Follow updates from wildlife and biosecurity agencies

This is a sobering reminder of how fragile our ecosystems are and how important it is that we continue to protect the wildlife we share this country with.

Our birds need us now more than ever.

Bird flu (Avian influenza)

The first suspected case of a deadly strain of bird flu that has killed millions of birds and mammals worldwide has been found in Western Australia, the federal government has confirmed.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza, known as H5, has devastated populations of seabirds, seals and other animals across the world.

If confirmed, the WA case would mark the first confirmation of the virus on mainland Australia.

Australia is the last continent in the world without a confirmed case.

On Friday, June 19, Federal Agricultural Minister Julie Collins said the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development was investigating.

"[The suspected case is] in a single migratory wild bird that was found sick in an isolated area in southern Western Australia," she said.

"The initial testing at the Western Australian laboratory has returned a suspected positive result for avian influenza."

Here's the latest looming government decision on Alcoa:

Since receiving an exemption order* in 2023, Alcoa has been found to have
- illegally cleared forest without federal permission for more than 15 years
- piped PFAS chemicals over critical water catchments without authorisation
- compromised conservation efforts by failing to share critical black cockatoo data, and
- misled Australians on rehabilitation claims.

The End Forest Mining alliance have called on the Environment Minister and Premier Cook to put a stop to future exemptions altogether, and to provide greater protection of the world's only jarrah forest.

*What's an 'exemption order'? In short, it's a way for the government to say that a project/company is exempt from the rules that would normally apply.
