Platypus and the Importance of Variable Water Flows.

Join Malmsbury Landcare members and friends for a presentation by Tiana Preston from Ecology Australia at 7.30 pm in the Malmsbury Town Hall on May 1 2025.
Malmsbury Landcare recently partnered with North Central Catchment Management Authority and Ecology Australia to conduct the fifth platypus survey in the Coliban River at Malmsbury since 2001. Tiana will present a summary of the survey findings to the community and discuss the biology and ecology of platypus before explaining why variable water flows are important to maintaining strong platypus populations.

Join noted zoologist and wildlife ecologist John Harris for a close up look at "Malmsbury's Nocturnal Neighbours". John will answer questions such as why some animals are nocturnal and will introduce us to the more recognizable nocturnal species recorded both in and near Malmsbury. Then we will learn about the less well-known species such as our micro-bats. Attendees will be invited outside to see the nocturnal neighbours in the Malmsbury Gardens and/or the Malmsbury Common (weather depending). The meeting is open to residents of Malmsbury and nearby communities as well as the members and friends of Malmsbury Landcare. It is funded by our "At Home with Biodiversity" grant which was provided and administered by North Central CMA.
Where: Malmsbury Town Hall - right next to the gardens

Thanks to Pat and Akko from Tree Tactics who did the tree climbing and greater glider nestbox installation for our project near Spring Hill. Brad and Paddy from Procon Pest & Wildlife Management designed and fabricated the nest boxes and were the on-ground support team during the installation. Fourteen boxes have been installed on a covenanted private property, with a further nine scheduled. The project is designed to facilitate movement by these endangered animals between known populations in the state forest and nearby suitable habitat.
