Our Marine Debris Campaign is turning 10! 🎉

A decade ago, two passionate Sea Shepherd volunteers, alarmed by the growing plastic washing up on our beautiful coastlines, banded together to launch what would become one of our most impactful campaigns in Australia!

From humble beginnings, with dedicated volunteers running local beach cleans, the campaign quickly grew into a nationwide movement, driven by the urgent need to tackle plastic pollution head-on.

To celebrate 10 years of protecting marine habitats, we’re hosting a series of special events at the end of February! 👇

🎬 Film screenings highlighting the campaign’s major milestones and the incredible work volunteers have achieved across Australia.
🌊 National Day for the Ocean on 22 February, where you can join our crew on beaches around the country to take action and help clean our coasts.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🌊

The Federal Government has announced they will renew commitment to fund frontline Indigenous Ranger ghost net patrols, securing the continuation and expansion of the Australian Government Ghost Nets Initiative.

The funding package includes $25.1 million over four years, expanding patrols into Western Australia, the Torres Strait, and the Arafura and Timor seas. Since 2021, the program has supported 24 Ranger groups, resulting in the removal of over 800 ghost nets and 140,000kg of marine debris from some of Australia’s most remote coastlines.

Sea Shepherd Australia has worked side by side with Indigenous Ranger groups since 2018, supporting remote clean-ups and ghost net response across northern Australia. Together, we’ve removed over 46 tonnes of debris this year alone, and more than 177 tonnes since our remote clean-ups began — protecting marine life, Sea Country, and cultural connections.

Remote Marine Debris Campaigner Grahame Lloyd said: “The relentless arrival of ghost nets and debris from both domestic and international sources means this work cannot pause without consequences for marine wildlife. Rangers’ presence on Country provides rapid response capability in areas where no other teams operate.”

This funding is a powerful recognition of the critical role Indigenous Rangers play in protecting Country and ocean ecosystems, and a major step forward in turning the tide on marine pollution. 🐊

🌊 Sea Shepherd has joined forces with the Yugul Mangi and Numbulwar Numburindi Rangers on the SEAL IPA for our latest clean-up mission to Dharrni.

The remote beaches here are plagued by deadly ghost nets that endanger nesting sea turtles, along with masses of plastic pollution threatening this beautiful country. This fragile coastline is home to turtles, shorebirds, crocodiles and dugongs, all at risk from marine debris.

Getting here required an epic 1,000 km journey from Darwin each way, across Arnhem Land to just below Blue Mud Bay. Our crew has spent the past 10 days on the ground removing ghost nets and plastic pollution.

Stay tuned for updates from this important mission!
